These positions are located in varies locations within the Montana/Dakotas BLM. Information about each location and the surrounding area can be found by searching the chamber of commerce web site for each city.
We expect to fill one or more vacancies in each location at this time; however, if needed, other locations within the Montana/Dakotas State, District or Field offices may be considered based on need and management discretion.
Duties
Performs limited drafting and mapping work involving a variety of basic cartographic methods.
Performs detailed tasks to gather and prepare digital data sets, maps, and/or charts; digitizes data sets and enters information into metadata files.
Provides assistance to other staff members in creating, editing, and correcting digital data or map information.
Performs quality control to reduce digitizing errors and correct compilation or publication errors in source material.
Provides assistance to more senior cartographers, technicians, and resource specialists in the development of digital data for off ice, state-wide and national natural resources geographic information systems.
Maintains data bases for generating cartographic output; prepares or modifies maps and prepares finished copies of reports.

Qualifications
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
For GS-4: You must posses six (6) months of general experience and six (6) months of specialized experience equivalent to GS-3 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated in the following examples: General experience is any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation. Specialized experience includes assisting with developing new transportation maps from ortho photos and notes, working with higher level technician using rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files, and verbal instructions to prepare intricate, small scale location exhibits and finished maps and plats.

Education: Successful completion of a 2-year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor`s degree that included at least 12 semester hours of cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, physical geography, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, calculus, and statistics. No more than 9 of the semester hours should be in mathematics or statistics.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate undergraduate education.
For GS-5: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-4 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: developing new transportation maps from ortho photos and notes; working from rough drawings, sketches, GIS data files, and verbal instructions to prepare intricate, small-scale location exhibits and finished maps and plats.

Education: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree that included at least 18 semester hours in courses such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, remote sensing, algebra, trigonometry, and calculus. Not more than 9 of the 18 semester hours should have been in mathematics or statistics.
