Duties
Use chainsaws to fall trees of moderate difficulty and complexity with accuracy in developed and non developed areas.
Recognize tree species, defects, wood characteristics and environmental hazards that may alter desired felling results.
Works in potentially hazardous conditions while being exposed to inclement weather, steep terrain and associated risks related to forest timber industry. Install and utilize rigging equipment while under direct supervision and communication with supervisor or designated leader.
Operate various types of equipment used in field operations such as skid steer loaders, brush chippers, stump grinders, power saws, portable winches and tree jacks.
Operate aerial platform controls to aid in tree hazard reduction. Drive medium duty trucks to transport crew and equipment to and from work sites.
Operate vehicles while towing trailers.
Perform minor maintenance on all equipment and tools.
Provide for public safety, protects property and surrounding environment to minimize resource impact.
Air Quality: Poor air quality afflicts Sequoia and Kings Canyon National Parks, especially during summer months - generally May to October. High ozone levels may be the most harmful pollutant here. Physical Demands: Heavy physical effort is required in bending, lifting, carrying and utilizing equipment. Frequently lifts and loads limbs and other tree parts weighing 50 pounds. Occasionally, with assistance, lifts and loads objects weighing from 60 pounds to over 100 pounds.
Working Conditions: The incumbent will be working outdoors in extreme temperatures varying from +100 to near 10 F, and at elevations ranging from 1000 feet to 7,000 feet. Work may be in heavy rain, falling snow, and frigid conditions. Incumbent is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, fumes, oils, solvents and cold and dampness. Incumbent is frequently exposed to serious injury associated with tree felling. May be required to work during adverse conditions and during emergency situations such as strong winds, rockslides, snow and rainstorms, floods and wildfires.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Have the ability to do the work of Tree Worker without more than normal supervision. (SCREEN OUT).
Work history must demonstrate experience in the following Tree Worker duties:
Operate different types and sizes of chainsaws in felling trees.
Fell trees of various sizes in non-developed areas.
Determine the appropriate method/process to fell trees, taking into consideration tree species, defects, wood characteristics and environmental hazards that may alter desired felling results.
Determine and apply the appropriate specialized tools to fell trees in desired direction.
Use ropes and cables to perform tree rigging and removal. Operate skid steer loaders, brush chippers, stump grinder and portable winches.
