This vacancy is for a Public Affairs Specialist position in the Department of Commerce located at the U.S. Census Bureau Headquarters in Suitland, Maryland. Duties

Plans, develops, and conducts integrated communications campaigns and public affairs programs, including both informational and promotional activities. Evaluates the impact and effectiveness of informational and promotional efforts and advises management on changes that should be made. Prepares communications materials on Census Bureau activities. Suggests approaches and assists in planning programs that involve multimedia content. Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Temporary Appointment: This is a Temporary Appointment; initial appointment is not to exceed (NTE) 1 year. This appointment may be extended an additional year at management's discretion.

Qualifications

This position may be filled as a competitive temporary promotion opportunity not to exceed (NTE) 5 years by a current career or career-conditional Department of Commerce employee. This temporary promotion may be extended, terminated earlier, or made permanent at management's discretion. At the conclusion of the temporary promotion, the employee will return to their position of record. Specialized Experience: For the GS-12, you must have one year of experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 in the Federal service. Experience for this position includes: Serving as a program liaison or project manager and collaborating with colleagues on communications content; professional social media experience with public accounts on platforms like Facebook, Twitter/X, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Instagram; involvement in managing or maintaining professional social media accounts, which may include content development, content planning, customer care, analytics, etc; writing/editing short-form content for social media or other external-facing online platforms; familiarity with communications products such as talking points and communication plans as well as style guides like the AP Stylebook; contributing to and/or executing strategic marketing and communications campaigns to advance a specific topic or mission; establishing and maintaining effective working relationships at multiple levels within an organization to develop and disseminate coordinated messages that accurately promote organizational programs; social media and/or content management systems such as Hootsuite, Sprinklr, Salesforce, Airtable, etc. Education cannot be substituted for specialized experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer.
