This position serves as Without Compensation Researcher within the Research and Development (R&D) Service of the Madison VHA. The VA Research Program strives to promote Veteran-centered care to improve patient experiences and outcomes across VA healthcare and community settings, and to advance value-driven care by providing Veterans the highest quality care at the lowest financial burden. Please note, there is not pay associated with this position.
Duties
The successful candidate will conduct research on dysphagia within the Dr. Rogus-Pulia laboratory. The Rogus-Pulia laboratory is interested in researching the causes of, and potential treatments for, swallowing disorders and related issues. The position requires PhD level training with experience in research on neurobiology and neurological disease. The work will investigate dysphagia in neurodegenerative disease. The successful candidate will serve as the Project Coordinator of numerous clinical research studies, which includes monitoring guidelines, timelines, and deadlines for all study activities. The Program Coordinator will work closely with the Director on calendar and task list management and overall lab organization. The incumbent will interface with internal and external collaborators, research personnel, and other entities as needed. In addition, the Program Coordinator will also work with counterparts in the lab to ensure that research study visits, regulatory processes, and other project work progress on time.
Principal duties include:
Coordinate the daily activities and contracts related to one or more research program(s)
Assist in the development, coordination, and facilitation of trainings and workshops for internal and external audiences to disseminate research program developments and information
Plan, develop, and implement processes and protocols to support research aims
Serve as a unit liaison and subject matter expert among internal and external stakeholder groups, collaborates across disciplines and functional areas, provides program information, and promotes the accomplishments and developments of scholars and research initiatives
Develop policies, procedures, and institutional agreements on behalf of the program
Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English.
Graduate of an accredited university with a Doctor of Philosophy Degree.
Physical Requirements: This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, and sitting. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must comply with any Employee Health requirements as a condition of employment. In the performance of duties, the incumbent may be required to drive and/or ride in GSA-vehicles.
Education Requirement: PhD required in Neurobiology or related discipline required with additional expertise in brain disease and benchtop research viewed favorably. The research includes analyzing swallow function and salivary production in those with swallowing disorders. The candidate must have:
