The primary purpose of the work in this position is to provide specialized research assistance and instruction through acquiring, cataloging, maintaining, and promoting the library’s collection of auction catalogs to National Gallery of Art curatorial staff, Center staff and fellows, and the public.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-1410-11. Specialized experience is at least one year of experience, equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, providing specialized research assistance and instruction through acquiring, cataloging, maintaining, and promoting the library’s collection of auction catalogs. Comprehensive professional knowledge and demonstrated experience in creating machine-readable cataloging records using standards set by the Library of Congress for descriptive cataloging, including Resource Description and Analysis. Utilizing local standards and exceptions set by the National Gallery of Art library, the creation of bibliographic records, holdings statements, and item records is performed using shared international and local automated library systems. Skill with Adobe Acrobat and Excel for tracking, modifying, and storing texts and documents. Ability to establish working relationships with collectors, dealers, librarians, and auction house staff to locate, share or acquire research materials. Familiarity with specialized printed and online auction and sales record resources such as SCIPIO, Lugt, Getty Provenance Index, Art Sales Index, Gordon’s, and Artnet. Knowledge of integrated library systems, library applications, and other relevant information technologies. Specialized knowledge of the history of art collecting, and the economics of material culture in Europe and the United States over time, as well as expertise in the documentation of art sales transactions and provenance. Reading knowledge of at least two European languages other than English is required for familiarity with art historical and bibliographic terminology, as well as the ability to identify and interpret bibliographic information in these European languages. Strong interpersonal and communication skills, for teaching, working in small teams, and for performing within the broader context of the library and the National Gallery. Other Relevant Eligibility Criteria: Successful candidates must have completed at least a bachelor’s degree at an accredited college or university, which included a combination of at least 24 semester hours in library science and information technology. Education

Applicants must also possess specialized knowledge of a subject-matter field and/or proficiency in one or more foreign languages directly related to the position(s) being filled. When such knowledge is required for the position, an applicant's education or experience must have included or been supplemented by the requirements specified in one of the paragraphs below:

1. A full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university that meets all academic requirements for a bachelor's degree that included at least 24 semester hours in the specialized field for which the applicant is being considered, e.g., physical science, biological science, social science; or that included any combination of subjects with at least 15 semester hours in a major subject (such as physics or chemistry) that is especially applicable to the position for which the applicant is being considered;

   or

2. Completion of at least 24 semester hours of legal study in an accredited law school for positions primarily concerned with providing library services in law or legislative reference;

   or

3. Four years of pertinent experience of such nature and level to provide a knowledge of the basic principles, theories, practices, techniques, terminology and expressions of the appropriate discipline or subject-matter field; an understanding of the standard methods, procedures, and techniques of research and analysis in the subject-matter field; ability to acquire additional information about the field and related fields; and some knowledge of literature resources in the field.

   Such experience should be equivalent to that which would have been acquired through successful completion of a full 4-year curriculum in an accredited college or university with major study in appropriate subjects, or combination of subjects, as specified in (a) above; or legal training as specified in (b) above;

   or

4. Any time equivalent combination of experience as described in (c) with education as described in (a) or (b) above;

   or

5. Demonstrated ability as shown by education or experience to read or translate information from one or more foreign languages into English.

Education must be obtained from an accredited institution recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
