This Cartographer position is located on the State Soil Scientist (SSS) staff, within the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), and serves collaboratively on the Soils/ Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Team assisting with the development and delivery of cartographic and various Geographic Information Systems (GIS) activities.
Duties
Gathers cartographic data to produce geospatial map products.
Maintains aerial, elevation, soil, vegetation, and hydrology data
Process cartographic data utilizing computer programs and software.
Evaluates and edits hard copy and digital orthophotography to determine land signatures, soil, hydrology and vegetation.
Requirements

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:
Degree: bachelor's or higher degree in cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e., college level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the required specialized experience and/or education for the respective grade level(s) in which you are applying:
GS-07:
Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties:

Gathering cartographic data to produce map products.
Performing scientific analyses using computer programs and software.
Reviewing cartographic data related to conservation programs.
OR
Education: One full year of graduate level education in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
Combination of Graduate Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify.
OR
Superior Academic Achievement: To qualify based on superior academic achievement, you must have completed the requirements for a bachelor's degree from an accredited institution in a field of study that demonstrates the competencies required by the position AND must meet one of the criteria below:
1. A grade point average of "B" (a GPA of 2.95 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all completed undergraduate courses, or those completed in the last two years of undergraduate study;
2. A grade point average of "B+" (a GPA of 3.45 or higher out of a possible 4.0) for all courses in the applicant's major field of study, or those courses in the applicant's major completed in the last two years of undergraduate study;
3. Rank in the upper one-third of the applicant's class in the college, university, or major subdivision; or
4. Membership in a national honor society (other than freshman honor societies) recognized by the Association of College Honor Societies.
GS-09:
Specialized Experience: One or more full-time years (12-months) of specialized work experience, equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service, performing the following duties:

Producing cartographic maps depicting resource concerns.
Utilizing cartographer computer programs and software for processing data.
Evaluating digital geospatial data to ensure compliance with related specifications.

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing.
OR
Combination of Experience and Graduate Education: To determine your combination, first compute your experience as a percentage of the specialized experience listed above; then determine your education as a percentage of the graduate education listed above; then add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate-level education in excess of one year (i.e., 18 semester hours) may be used when combining experience and graduate education for this grade.
