Duties

Provides a full range of field level overhaul, repair, and preventive maintenance on a variety of fixed, semi-fixed and portable industrial equipment. Repairs and maintains security force protection/anti-terrorism vehicle restraint systems (Active Vehicle Barriers) in operational use. Determines the exact nature and extent of repair required and performs major and minor overhaul and repair of engines, engine accessories, power transmissions, suspension, steering and braking systems, (next bullet) as well as related electrical, fuel, hydraulic, wheel/ engine assemblies and component parts. Repairs snow removal equipment and equipment which has mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic and electrical systems and controls or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks. Uses a wide variety of test equipment to include test panels, multi-meters, compression testers and motor analyzers as well as visual and audio checks to identify equipment problems and perform operational testing following completed repairs. Manages the Defense Property and Accountability System (DPAS).

Qualifications

To qualify for an Automotive Mechanic, your resume and supporting documentation must support: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the Office of Personnel Management Qualification Standard for Trades and Labor Occupations. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties at the level for which you are applying. Emphasis is placed on how you gained the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time, and the required ability or potential to perform the job. Applicants who do not meet the screen-out element (SOE) will be eliminated from further competition. The SOE and minimum qualifications for this position is: Ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision (SOE): Perform the common tasks of the job to be filled but under close supervision, such as operational checks, replacing starters and brakes, and checking for leaks. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Physical Effort Work in tiring and uncomfortable positions requiring frequent bending, reaching, stretching, climbing, and crouching. Often works on top and under vehicles in cramped positions; performs strenuous work. Frequently lifts and carries items weighting40 to 50 pounds or more and often must push, pull, turn, and position parts, assemblies, equipment and tools. Often lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of others and with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. Working Conditions Works both inside and outside and is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures and noise. May sometimes work in areas where exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes and from hard damp floors and ground. Frequently is exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritation from acids, fluids and lubricants. Mechanic typically works on parts and systems that are dirty, oily or greasy. At times the mechanic may be required to use protective safety devices which may be uncomfortable if used for extended periods of time. Occasionally required to work in inclement weather conditions including high winds, rain, snow, and freezing temperatures.
