Duties

The housekeeping aids who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a housekeeping aide means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff. As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs in halls and rooms, and vacuuming and polishing floors. Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas. Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision. Major duties include but are not limited to: Incumbent independently plans and distributes work on a day to day or project by project basis. Incumbent should be flexible in the day to day decision making process to ensure adequate coverage, supplies and equipment are allocated as needed and proper procedures are being followed. Maintains and submits Holiday and Over Time schedules to Chief of Environmental Management Services, approves or disapproves leave as work load dictates. The supervisor is responsible for assuring the efficient and proper completion of work assignments by subordinates within the department. Responds and addresses all Environmental Management problems that arise during the work shift. Incumbent must understand man power versus work load to ensure daily operations and projects set by his/her supervisor are completed. Enforces prescribed safety practices and performance of duty. Incumbent should be able to perform the following duties and functions: Oral and written communication skills: It is imperative that incumbent be able to present himself/herself orally in a professional manner at all times whether it is with an EMS staff member, co-worker, patient or visitor. In addition to effective communication skills, it is necessary for incumbent to be proficient with basic grammar structure in written and electronic communication. Time Sheets: Check employees in and out by issuing and collecting keys and pagers during tour of duty. Proper leave codes are annotated on Supervisory remarks form and other associated reports. Ensure timely submission to Administrative Time Keeper. Inspections: Perform Environmental inspections in assigned areas, documenting, correcting and annotating all deficiencies found and submitting them to the Chief Environmental Management Services in a timely manner. Environment of Care rounds are conducted as designated. Training: Continuously trains and demonstrates all EMS Standard Operating Procedures, ·equipment, policies and all VA mandated TMS classes. Ensures employees have adequate hands-on training and are competent in EMS functions. All employees training is properly documented and submitted to the Chief Environmental Management Services in a timely manner. Accomplishment Sheets: Properly documents events of tour of duty using time lines, employee names and all other pertinent information and submitting them to the Chief Environmental Management Services at end of tour. Employee Appraisals and Competencies: All required paper work for both employee appraisals and competency folders are completed, signed, dated and submitted by deadline requirements. Ensures employee understands the appraisal system, explaining the evaluation criteria for their. positions, and issuing a signed copy of said appraisal Work Schedule: 7:00 am - 7:30 pm and/or 7:30 pm - 8:00 am. Includes weekends, holidays,12 hour shifts are available based on the needs of the service.. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/21/2024. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards. SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment. Physical Requirements: No special above-average physical demands, (ability, dexterity, or strength) are required to perform the work. Work is divided between sedentary sitting and walking, standing, bending, stooping; and lifting. Incumbent will need to drive an automobile to conduct fieldwork. Fieldwork may involve traveling to offsite locations for meetings and sources of information. Working Conditions: Work is usually performed in Offices, Meeting/Conference Rooms, Labs, Exam Rooms, Waiting Rooms, Patient Wards, or similar settings. The work areas are adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated, but may also include areas that are not, to perform inspections as needed.
