This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service. About the Position: This position serves as Marine Machinery Repairer performing installing, repairing, maintaining, testing, and adjusting equipment machinery found on the derrick boat. Buffalo District, TSD, Operations Branch, Ohio Operations and Maintenance Office Repair Fleet, Cleveland, Ohio.

Duties

Participates in maintenance and complete overhauls of machinery and equipment located on floating and land plant equipment assigned. Prepares detailed requests for purchase of needed parts, supplies, and materials giving exact nomenclature and description to ensure timely delivery and accurate cost obligations. Performs repairs and installations of hydraulic and mechanical systems, performs preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities. Responsible for proper use, care, and maintenance/repair of the facility, tools, materials, equipment, and testing instruments used in the preventive maintenance of floating equipment and lock and dam operating systems. Performs installation of new equipment, maintenance, repair, overhaul or replacement of parts, systems, and equipment normally associated with the building, grounds and utilities of such facilities. Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires a pre-employment physical examination and be enrolled in the medical surveillance program that requires annual physical examinations.

  • This position requires Temporary Duty Travel (TDY) 50% of the duty time.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Repairer ~ without more than normal supervision. Performing a variety of installing, maintaining, repairing, overhauling diesel and gasoline internal combustion marine engines and other related equipment aboard floating plants. Using power tools such as lifts, sling chains and/or rock hooks on a daily basis. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. PHYSICAL EFFORT: Work requires continual physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools, while working from scaffolds, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling; reaching, climbing, working overhead, crawling and crouching in strained and/or awkward positions often for prolonged periods while blasting, painting, or otherwise working on structures sometimes at heights up to 55 feet. In addition to work from aerial tower "cage", is required to possess agility and work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, or other stagging's, and is required to lift, carry, and set up equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Handling of blasting hose requires control of 110 psi pressure. WORKING CONDITIONS: Performs work primarily outdoors, but also inside. Outdoor work is subject to temperature and other weather extremes typical of the local climate. Inside work is performed inside valve gate recesses, fainter gate recesses, fainter or roller dam gates, or other enclosed or semi-enclosed locations which subject the worker to fumes, dust or another unpleasant environment. Work is performed from scaffolding, permanently installed walkways and platforms or ladders above ground level, and, in many instances, above water thus subjecting employee to injuries associated with falls and water. Other exposure to heat, dust, rust, scale, abrasives, paint fumes is present with the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones and cuts being present. Some discomfort from protective clothing, gloves, or other equipment is normal.
