You will serve as a SMALL CRAFT OPERATION & REPAIR SUPERVISOR I in the PORT OPERATIONS DIVISION of CNI NAVMAG INDIAN ISLAND.

Duties

You will establish work priorities and assignments for the shift, provide waterfront operational direction, and provide guidance on maintenance-repair of small boats and marine craft. You will oversee preventive/corrective maintenance, installation/operation of marine diesel engines, outboard gasoline engines, various marine subsystems involving electronics, power generation, hydraulics, power transmission, etc. You will oversee preventive and corrective maintenance, installation and operation on equipment on a variety of marine craft and shop equipment. You will regularly assist with administrative duties such as individual development plans, counsel employee on performance, and formally appraises work performance. You will demonstrate a thorough working knowledge of many types of small craft and equipment such as barrier boats, log broncs, utility boats, skimmers, and security vessels.

  • Must be able to comply with odd shift and weekend work requirements.
  • The incumbent may also be required to apply for and obtain a forklift license up to 3 ton (6,000# capacity 7.5 ton (15,000#) capacity.)
  • The incumbent is required to become Person-in-Charge (PIC), Facility Response Team (FRT) and HAZWOPER qualified.
  • Incumbent must attend all requisite Oil Spill Response training, to include Spill Supervisor in Incident Command System 100 and 200, and Spill Management Team Member.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE 1) Tracking all spill prevention and response equipment, ensuring adequate equipment is ready at all times and providing status to Port Operations managers; 2) Performing all maintenance and repair on service craft, boats and spill response equipment; assisting with executing booming strategies; 3) Providing maintenance-repair of small boats and marine craft; 4) Placing pier platforms, gangways, barges, and other berthing support; 5) Planning work schedules and sequence of operations for the work force supervised; 6) Establishing shop priorities and determining the number and type of personnel required to accomplish job assignments; 7) Observing work in progress for compliance with required specifications. The work requires long periods of constant standing, kneeling, bending, pulling, reaching and walking on wet, slick and icy decks and uneven terrain aboard on the craft. Job performance may require working in cramped or awkward positions to reach a boat's engine. Must be able to climb vertical ladders, stairs and step over three foot bulwarks on a moving craft, which requires the use of legs, hands, and arms. Will be required to lift, carry/push/pull and move articles weighing up to 44 pounds. Must have peripheral vision that will enable the incumbent to avoid falls and moving objects and be able to distinguish between basic colors, as well as shades of colors Must have sufficient hearing to hear verbal commands over surrounding noise of craft and ship operations. Work requires physical exertion so incumbent must be able to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb and work in uncomfortable positions. WORKING CONDITIONS: Incumbent will work outside in all kinds of weather and inside an engine room. Will be subjected to outdoor conditions such as hot sun, spray, rain, sleet, and ice. Will be subjected to heat and noise from an operating diesel engine or various shop equipment. Incumbent will be exposed to the following: industrial dirt, dust, grease, oil, industrial fumes, and airborne particles; possible injury from falls due to slippery footing and erratic motion; possible strains, cuts and bruises; industrial noises generated by operating machinery and equipment with the possibility of hearing loss; eye hazards will exist in most areas and /or in certain operations; and organic growth (such as sea growth, barnacles, and shellfish) in dry-docks, saltwater systems, and other areas exposed to seawater. Will be required to use protective devices, clothing or equipment while exposed to adverse environmental and hazardous work assignments. The incumbent may be assigned to work areas where certain potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These agents may include, but are not limited to: fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation, chemicals, etc. Incumbent may also be assigned to work areas where contact with sewage waste is possible. To ensure employee safety and health, the CNRNW and PSNS & IMF maintain personnel protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of the medical surveillance programs, the incumbent will be required to take medical examinations to assess his/her medical qualifications and/or need for vaccination for duty involving work with these agents and/or possible contraction of disease. SAFETY: Incumbent is responsible for following safe work practices, including the use of appropriate personnel protective equipment (PPE). Incumbent is required to perform the duties of this position with the highest level of attention to safety and health and will take the initiative to make their work areas safe for themselves, as well as those working around them.
