Duties

You will install, repair, and maintain a variety of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and systems used to condition areas and cool equipment. You will replace major portions of various cooling units such as compressors, condensers, expansion valves, float and service valves, thermostats, coils, and drive assemblies. You will work from blueprints, drawings, and specifications. You will trace and locate defects, determine nature and extent of repairs required, and test unit upon completion of repair to ensure that equipment and systems operate as intended. You will calibrate gauges, thermostats, or thermometers to maintain operating condition.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability to perform the duties of an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic under normal supervision: 1) Performing minor repairs and maintenance to domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and equipment; 2) Working from blueprints and work orders to assist in the repair and installation of domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and equipment; and 3) Selecting tools and testing devices to install and determine repairs needed on domestic and commercial refrigeration and air conditioning units and equipment. Working under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. **NOTE: This experience must be fully and clearly supported in your resume. Physical Effort: Lifts, carries, and handles equipment up to 40 pounds unassisted and sometimes over 40 pounds, with assistance. Works from ladders, scaffolding platforms, or cramped areas where equipment parts or tools are hard to reach. Work requires stooping, stretching, bending, kneeling, and working in tiring, uncomfortable positions. Working Environment: The work is done inside and outside, on elevated structures, and in cramped areas and is usually dirty, dusty, and greasy. Subject to discomfort from face masks or other protective devices when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants, noxious gases, fumes, or acids. Subject to possible burns from refrigerants. Works near moving parts of equipment or machinery, energized electrical circuits, sharp metal edges, loud noises and toxic fumes, which could cause cuts, burns and respiratory ailments. May be subject to sudden and frequent temperature changes. Required to wear safety equipment such as safety shoes, glasses, ear protection and hard hats.
