Serves as a Coder and Clinical Data Analyst in the Medical Records Department, located at the Haskell Health Center, Lawrence, KS. The purpose of this position is to interpret and analyze clinical data, assign, and audit diagnostic and procedural codes, abstract clinical information into the computer database, and make determinations regarding appropriate utilization of services/medical necessity for all types of hospital/clinic records. Incumbent reports to the Medical Records Administrator.
Duties
Accurately code diagnoses and procedures in accordance with coding guidelines.
Analyze provider documentation to assign appropriate evaluation and management levels.
Formulate written and verbal queries to providers to clarify documentation discrepancies or confirm specificity.
Analyze health record to assure presence and compliance of all component parts.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-6: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include knowledge of coding terminology, performing chart analysis and following well-established medical record procedures; analyzing, interpreting and abstracting data from clinical documentation and/or electronic health record and assigning correct diagnostic and procedure codes; selects and assigns a principle code along with other codes.
GS-7: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include evaluating the record for internal consistency and completeness; responsible for coding the diagnoses, operations and/or procedures from the medical record and entering into the Resources and patient management system; assures the final diagnosis and operative procedures as slated by the physician are valid and complete; making final determination that the record is complete, accurate and reflects sufficient data to justify the diagnosis. Apply ICD-10 Codes, CPT, HCPCS codes to visits and research information as necessary to get the correct diagnosis code.
GS-8: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector. Examples include accurately assigns and sequences medical codes for all diagnoses, procedures, and services; reviews and assigns accurate current procedural terminology codes; analyzes medical documentation to assure the appropriate evaluation and management levels are assigned; being responsible for coding all related ambulatory visits. Apply ICD-10 Codes, CPT, HCPCS codes to visits and research information as necessary to get the correct diagnosis code, and research information necessary to apply all correct coding following coding guidelines, CCI edits, and CMS guidelines.
Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
