Duties

-Leads a team of trades and/or labor workers. -Performs work. -Troubleshoots problem areas and inspects for defective equipment and faulty wiring. -Uses and maintains various types of hand and/or power tools, such as screwdrivers, pliers, wire cutters, soldering irons, cable pullers, hydraulic benders, and pipe threading machines. -Utilizes safety practices and procedures following established safety rules and regulations and maintains a safe and clean work environment.

  • The work requires the employee to drive a motor vehicle. An appropriate, valid driver’s license is required for the position
  • May work with hazardous materials such as asbestos or accumulated waste. Employee will be required to wear protective clothing and gear on these occasions
  • Will be required to train/guide lower graded (or other trade) military /civilian employees
  • This position has been designated by the Air Force as a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Air Force Civilian Drug Demand Reduction Program
  • Employee must pass initial and periodic short notice drug testing. Illegal drug use by employees in sensitive positions presents a clear threat to the mission of the Air Force, national security, and public safety
  • This position requires a physical/medical examination. The physical requirements of this position as determined by the manager are works in tiring or uncomfortable positions for long periods. The work requires frequent standing

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-2800, Electrical Installation and Maintenance Group, Electrician, 2805 series.. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is ability to lead or supervise. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures. 2. Working knowledge of technical practices in order to plan, layout, install, modify, troubleshoot and repair a variety of electrical systems. 3. Knowledge of electrical and electronic theory and instruments used in shop/trade practices and electrical equipment, i.e., test lamps, multimeters, circuit analyzers, circuit breaker testers, voltage recording meters, meggers, watt meters, ohmmeters and ammeters. 4. Skill in using/maintaining hand tools such as, screw drivers, pliers, wire cutters/strippers, cable pullers, drills, soldering irons and manual or power conduit benders and threaders. 5. Skill in troubleshooting and tracing hard-to-locate defects or problem areas. 6. Ability to use electrical drawings, blueprints, engineering drawings and working diagrams to install, troubleshoot, repair and maintain various electrical systems, controls and equipment without more than normal supervision. 7. Ability to lead and implement sound personnel policies, practices and procedures. Physical Effort Makes repairs/new installs from work stands and other hard-to-reach places. Must stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, stretch and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts parts and equipment that weigh up to 20 pounds. Occasionally lifts items that weigh over 40 pounds using lifting devices or with assistance from other workers. Working Conditions Works both inside and outside, sometimes in bad weather and in areas that are noisy, dirty, dusty and greasy. May work in elevated positions on scaffolding, cranes or mechanical lifts at heights of 30 feet or more or in close quarters such as manholes, attics or basements. Subject to electrical shock, burns, cuts and bruises. May be exposed to temperature extremes in test facilities, extremely high noise levels and exposed to lead, radiation, chemicals or carcinogens. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
