You will serve as a Rigger in the Facility & Plant Maintenance Division, Facility & Infrastructure Management Department of FLEET READINESS CENTER SOUTHWEST. This announcement uses the Certain Personnel of the DoD direct hire authority to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.

Duties

You will direct the operation of cranes and similar equipment. You will estimate sizes, weights, equipment capacities and plans for clearance and safety factors. You will fabricate, install and repair standing and running rigging and wire cable or fiber rope articles such as slings, towing bridles and nets. You will install beam clamps, gin poles, gallows frames and other supporting structures. You will use jacks, pulley blocks, chain falls, roller and similar equipment to move and position heavy items. You will install and/or locate positions for beam clamps, pad-eyes and other attachments.

Requirements

  • You will be required to drive a motor vehicle and forklift.
  • You will be required to possess the applicable license (s) or authorization(s) to operate assigned equipment, such as small mobile cranes, forklifts and motor vehicles.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment and periodic physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment drug test (including marijuana) is required. A tentative offer of employment will be rescinded if you fail to report to the drug test appointment or fail the test. You will be subject to random testing.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required to pass a 40-hour crane rigger training required by Navy Crane Center.
  • You may be required to lift weights up to 45 pounds.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: I have the ability to perform common tasks including: 1) Planning, laying out, assembling, and installing rigging to move objects in confined areas; 2) Reading and understanding blueprints, technical work documents and sketches; 3) Using hand signals to guide crane operators in hoisting, lowering, and placing loads in desired locations; 4) and Demonstrating knowledge of equipment capabilities and limitations, and of trade principles and practices to maneuver loads over, under and around obstacles.
