These positions are located in Medford, Roseburg or Coos Bay, OR District Offices. This is a Term position not-to-exceed (NTE) four (4) years from employment date. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal Service.

Duties

The incumbent of this position is primarily responsible for the operation of heavy construction equipment and trucks in the performance of road maintenance on timber access roads in Western Oregon.

  • You cannot hold an active real estate license, nor can you have an interest or hold stocks in firms with interest in Federal Lands.
  • If you are a new employee or supervisor in the Federal government, you will be required to complete a one-year probationary period.
  • Subject to the requirements of the Department of Transportation (DOT) drug and alcohol testing program, and is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) under the Department of the Interior (DOI) Drug-Free Workplace Program.
  • Required to wear all applicable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) associated with the job.

Qualifications

To qualify, there is no specific length of training or experience required; however, your resume must demonstrate enough experience to show your ability to perform the duties of a Engineering Equipment Operator without more than normal supervision. Examples of such experience include: (1) Operating gasoline or diesel-powered equipment such as road graders, bulldozers, excavators, backhoes, or trench diggers in simple terrains; (2) Operating equipment to push, pull, pile, or load materials; (3) Conducting routine minor or lower-graded maintenance in the areas of carpentry, masonry, electrical, painting, plumbing, and/or welding; (4) Interpreting instructions/specifications associated with heavy equipment operation. SELECTIVE FACTOR: This position has a Selective Placement Factor (screen-out) which will be used to determine minimum qualifications for this position. Applicants not possessing this Selective Placement Factor will be found ineligible for this position. The Selective Placement Factor is: Possess and maintain a valid Class A Commercial Driver's License prior to entrance with appropriate endorsements. Physical Effort: Heavy physical effort is required in constantly climbing in and out of different machines, and pushing and pulling levers continuously while machine is in operation. Work is strenuous because of the equipment operated, and the adjustments made. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating the equipment. The incumbent is required to lift and carry items weighing up to 50 pounds and often puts forth similar effort when pushing, pulling, turning, and positioning equipment and tools. Work Environment: The operation of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment increases exposure and risk of injury. The incumbent works both inside and outside and is exposed to hot and humid weather and/or extremely cold weather with temperatures ranging from below 0 to above 105 degrees Fahrenheit. Ice, road oils, and other items such as loose gravel and rocks may create hazardous conditions. The operator is subjected to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, oils, solvents, and fumes from motors and exhausts. When working inside, the incumbent must ensure proper ventilation to minimize fumes caused by equipment or vehicles. The incumbent is frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, abrasions, bruises and strains while operating equipment. The incumbent is required to follow all prescribed safety practices and use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as protective hearing devices and hard hats to prevent injury.

Education

There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
