The primary purpose of this position is to provide a student trainee who has been appointed to the Pathways Program with on-the-job training and guidance to further student technical development.

Duties
****This position is temporary and has a Not-to-Exceed date. However, this position may be extended to the fullest legally allowable period without competition. The appointment may also end early due to lack of work or funds.****
Performs selected tasks and phases of routine studies and projects that require application of basic occupational field theory and principles in the technical area of Engineering.
Participates with senior personnel in conducting non-routine projects.
Provides assistance in planning, monitoring, and conducting special studies, projects, and initiatives.
Uses computer/computer software such as information management programs, computer aided design and drafting (CADD) programs, and project tracking programs to assist senior personnel in solving engineering problems.
Requirements
- Must meet suitability requirements for Federal employment
- Must be at least 16 years of age
- Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualiflying accredited institution
- Must sign a Pathways Participant Agreement
- U.S. citizen or national (resident of American Samoa or Swains Island)
- Males 18 years or older must be registered for Selective Service, see Legal and Regulatory Guidance
- You must be a student currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment in an accredited college or university
- Enrollment must be at least half-time course load as defined by the education institution (typically six hours or equivalent for undergraduate and three hours or equivalent for graduate)
- The position is subject to provisions of the DoD Priority Placement Program

- This position may require drug testing and the candidate may be subject to passing a drug test upon selection
- Selectee is expected to be granted with and/or maintain the appropriate security clearance required for the position
- Selectee may be required to serve a probationary or trial period
- Have and maintain a good academic standing with at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for bachelor's programs and 3.0 cumulative GPA on a 4.0 grading scale for master's program
- Work may require travel away from the normal duty station on military and commercial aircraft
- This position is established under the provisions of the Pathways Program
- The actual work performed in this position has been reviewed and determined that it does not meet any of the exemption criteria defined in 5 CFR 551. This position has been designated as nonexempt
Qualifications
In order to qualify, you must meet the general experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for General Schedule Positions. Failure to submit transcripts, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university will result in an ineligible rating.
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-01: Current enrollment in a high school diploma program.
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-02: Completion of a high school diploma or equivalent no later than June 2023 AND acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university.
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-03: Completion of 30 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.)
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-04: Completion of 60 semester hours or more of post-high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.).
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-05: Completion of 120 semester hours or more of post high school study leading towards a qualifying degree (i.e. associate's, bachelor's, master's, etc.)
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-07: Completion of 18 semester hours or more of graduate level education or completion of degree requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement and current enrollment in a graduate degree program. NOTE: Superior Academic Achievement is defined as based on (1) class standing, (2) grade point average, or (3) honor society membership.
Qualifications for Student Trainee GS-09: Completion of 36 semester hours or more of graduate level program and acceptance/ enrollment in additional master's or doctorate degree program.
REQUIRED AREA OF STUDY: Seeking a professional engineering degree. The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits; (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.
***For completed educational programs or equivalent during Spring/Summer 2024, proof of acceptance or current enrollment in an accredited college/university for Fall 2024 must be provided**
PLEASE NOTE: This is not a developmental opportunity; this position will be filled at the GS-01 through GS-09 depending on applicant qualifications and organizational requirements. The individual selected for this position may be considered for promotion to a higher grade without further competition upon meeting all legal and regulatory/program requirements.
