Duties

As a Health Scientist, you will: Plan and conduct scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health problems. Identify and analyze public health issues and their impact on operations that are critical to the public health community at large. Provide technical advice and assistance to national, state and local health agencies and to various other organizations. Prepare scientific and other articles and technical reports for publication.

Basic Qualifications: Degree: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. In addition to Basic Qualifications above, Minimum Qualifications must be met: GS-9: At least 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position OR 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, which must include the following experience: with emergency response activities by assisting with the design and/or conduct of major scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health related problems at either federal, state, tribal, local, and/or territorial government organizations, such as health departments or similar non-governmental or private-sector organizationsOR A combination of education & experience GS-11: At least 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in a field that is directly related to the duties of this position OR 1 year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: supporting emergency response activities by assisting with the design, oversight, implementation, and/or conduct of major scientific surveys/studies or projects to identify and solve public health related problems at either federal, state, tribal, local, and/or territorial government organizations, such as health departments or similar non-governmental or private-sector organizations OR A combination of education & experience Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Promotion potential: Promotion to the next grade level is at management's discretion and is based on your meeting qualifications and time-in-grade requirements, demonstrated ability to perform the higher-level duties, the continuing need for the higher-level duties, and administrative approval. Promotion to the next grade level is not guaranteed and no promise of promotion is implied.
