DIRECT HIRE AUTHORITY: This position is being filled using Direct-Hire Authority (COVID-19 - VA 002) in-accordance with 5 U.S.C. 3304(a)(3) and 5 CFR 337.205(b)(1)-(4).
Duties
This position is located in Nutrition and Food Service Division at the Milwaukee VA and is responsible for providing food service assistance. Food Service Workers at this level perform duties that require proficiency in special procedures and a broad knowledge of service operations, such as food preparation, dishwashing, dry and refrigerated storage, and food and beverage serving.
Employees perform a variety of duties related to inpatient nutrition services. The work involves final review of diet trays before delivery to patients; preparation and serving of specialized foods and beverages; limited food preparation to assist cooks, dishwashing and cleaning tasks.
- Conduct final checks of diet trays to ensure correct food temperature and those selections/portions comply with remarks annotated on tray ticket or diet card.
- Distribute menus and assist patients in completing their selections as well as accurately entering menu selections into the computer system and follow procedures to accurately record and complete calorie counts for patients as ordered.
- Manage all functions pertaining to diet office communication center when assigned.
- Uses computer to run diet activity list and tray tickets and prepare tray tickets and patient select menus for the tray line.
- Run nourishment labels, check diet changes for early and late trays, prepare slips for outpatients, run back-up copies for tray tickets and nourishments, remove NPO's and assist in food preparation as needed.
- Assemble, label, and arrange completed recipe items in preparation for use by cooks.
- Assist higher graded cooks and/or independently prepares menu items that require little processing.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Work Schedule: 6-2:30 with every other weekend and off 1 day during the week (and every other weekend)

Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to and must be physically able to perform work involving constant standing, walking, frequent bending, stooping, pushing and pulling. They must be able to lift up to 40 pounds and be able to push heavy carts and trucks in unloading, storing and delivering supplies and transport heavy objects and food service equipment.
Working Conditions: There is a danger of slipping on wet floors where food or beverages have been dropped. The incumbent are regularly exposed to hot liquids, sharp cutting blades, hot working surfaces and extreme temperatures. Depending upon the job assignment the work may require the use of protective clothing and gear such as masks, gowns, gloves, earplugs, goggles, beard snoods and freezer coats. Clothing and dress must meet sanitation and safety standards. The employees works with frequent interruptions and must maintain accuracy with little margin for error.
