The Columbia VA Health Care System (VAHCS) opened in 1932 at its current location. The facility has 204 skilled nursing beds, which includes acute medical, surgical, psychiatric, and long-term care. The hospital provides primary, secondary, and some tertiary care. The facility is a complex teaching hospital, providing a full range of patient care services, with state-of-the-art technology, education, and research.

Duties

This position provides journeyman level craft labor, working with tools to install, repair, replace and perform preventive maintenance for environmental control systems in all campus buildings. The incumbent installs, repairs and maintains valves, thermostats, sensors, coils, dampers, VAV,CAV, Medical Air Compressors, and other components of pneumatic, electric, and electronic systems controlling the delivery of heat/hot water and/or air conditioning/chilled water to Medical Center facilities in order to maintain proper environmental temperatures. This position installs control valves in building heating and cooling systems: rebuilds valves operated by hydraulic, electric or pneumatic controllers; removes and replaces damaged or deteriorated packing in valves; and changes and adjusts diaphragms in valve activators. The incumbent repairs, replaces, adjusts and calibrates thermostats and sensors controlling individual rooms and large air handlers. This position repairs coils and air handling mechanisms, adjusting valves controlling the flow of liquid to coils. This position inspects and adjusts dampers to ensure proper opening and closing as specified by manufacturers and maintains damper motors and activators to maintain damper function. The incumbent visually inspects and observes pressure and vacuum gauges and adjusts controls to insure proper operation, by modification and balancing various elements.. This position tests joints and connections for leaks, and cuts, threads and installs replacement pipe tubing and joints/couplers. The incumbent inspects, repairs and replaces variable air volume(VAV) boxes located in ductwork. This position inspects, repairs and replaces constant air volume (CAV) boxes, Medical Air compressors, Medical and Dental Vacuum systems. The incumbent follows and changes computer software programs as necessary to troubleshoot and correct DDC control routines. This position uses tools to install, repair, replace and perform preventative maintenance for all types of refrigeration equipment. The incumbent installs, repairs and maintains chillers, ice-making equipment, refrigerators, freezers, water cooling systems window air conditioning units, DX-type free standing air-conditioning units for computer rooms, kitchen equipment and refrigerated air dryers for environmental control systems. The incumbent monitors the level of refrigerants in cooling/refrigeration systems, removes air from systems and charges systems with manufacture's specified amount and type of refrigerant. Work Schedule: Mon-Fri 2:30p.m. - 11:00p.m. Position Description Title/PD#: Air Cond Equip Mechanic/PD10333A and PD01343A Physical Requirements: Most of the work is usually performed inside, but the incumbent is frequently subject to sudden temperature changes when working on equipment such as walk-in freezer units. He/She is occasionally subjected to cuts, burns, electrical shocks, and respiratory ailments; and exposed to repeated, prolonged or concentrated amounts of refrigerant gases that may cause toxic effects on eyes, skin, and internal organs. There is an occasional requirement to work outside, on top of tall buildings, in drafty attic spaces, and in cramped areas with low overheads. The incumbent must be able to use wrenches, pipe wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, torches, and other tools of the trade to install, remove, dismantle, adjust, reassemble and re-install coils, piping, control gauges, valves, thermostats and other control elements and components. The incumbent must be able to work at ground/floor level and/or in restricted spaces up to two hours at a time for the entire length of shift in order to access HVAC control systems and equipment.
