The SNTs level of practice will be dependent upon clinical skills certified by the School of Nursing. Assignment will be progressive based on verification of completed clinical skills within the nursing program and/or the clinical experience at the Iron Mountain VA Medical Center.
Duties
The position is an intermediate developmental position; Incumbents will be given opportunities to provide basic nursing care and procedures in alignment with the competencies learned in the academic setting and validated by VA staff in order to provide care to patients/residents with acute to chronic conditions in a health care setting. The significant factor is that they provide care under close supervision, are learning to perform complex nursing skills, and will refer issues/questions to supervisors, higher graded SNTs, Licensed staff or other healthcare professionals. The position may perform theses duties in a variety of health care settings such as outpatient, inpatient, home or community living care, acute, sub-acute. The position is responsible for appropriately utilizing glucose monitoring machines to collect and document appropriate glucose readings for assigned veterans, observation of patients, performs aspects of nursing care to meet patient's needs for the following: Personal Hygiene, Physical comfort, Activity, Exercise, Rest, Nutrition, Elimination, Prevention of Skin Breakdown, Rehabilitative Aspects of Care, Engages in-group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups, Sets up patient care related equipment, Organizes and obtains routine supplies and equipment, Assists with orienting patient/family to unit routines and policies, monitors patients according to levels of observations i.e. (I:I Veterans as well as Veterans observation status.), and Performing and documenting prescribed medical treatment and interventions for patients, such as diabetic urine testing and blood testing, simple dressing changes. The position also begins to utilize rehabilitative principles to promote patient independence and recovery, encouraging and guiding them in bowel and bladder training and other daily nursing care. Engaging in group activities such as off-station trips, reality orientation, current events and other therapeutic groups. Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.Basic Requirements:

Must be proficient in basic written and spoken English
Must have completed at least one semester of nursing clinicals in an Associate or Baccalaureate Program
Must be enrolled in a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

Nursing Assistant experience
Qualifying specialized experience includes nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, or in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties, such as:
Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care.
Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus.
Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement.
Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients.
