About the Position: Serves as an Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic at the Joint Manufacturing and Technology Center (JMTC), Rock Island Arsenal, IL., performing the full range of work involved in the repair, overall maintenance, and servicing of industrial air conditioning units and systems, ventilating systems, and related equipment.

Duties

Perform air conditioning and refrigerant installation and repairs. Troubleshoot, maintain, overhaul and service industrial and commercial air conditioning, heat pump and refrigeration systems of various capacities. Diagnose and locate malfunctions; disassemble, repair, and replace equipment/parts. Operate a variety of electronic equipment/tools such as volt and ohm meters, torches and brazing equipment, pneumatic calibration equipment, air flow measuring devices, refrigerant gauges, etc. Read, interpret, and apply technical equipment instructions in the maintenance and repair of equipment and systems. Maintain inventory of spare parts.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Pre-employment physical required as a condition of employment, prior to appointment, reassignment, or transfer, prior to reporting for duty. Subsequent annual physicals are required.
  • One year trial/probationary period may be required.

Selective Placement Factor: This position has the following selective placement factor which must be met at the time of application and for continued employment: In accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act, this position requires a current Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) approved Universal Certification Type I, Type II and Type III. (Note: You MUST submit a copy of your certification with your application.) Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic~ without more than normal supervision. I can install and make repairs to a variety of air conditioning and cooling unit systems; I can read blueprints, factory data, diagrams or schematics when performing these tasks, and I can select, use and/or maintain tools/equipment needed to perform these tasks. - Failure to meet this Screen out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision (Screen-out Element)Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specifications, etc. (Includes Blueprint Reading)Ability to Use and Maintain Tools and EquipmentKnowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation, and Repair, etc.Knowledge of MaterialsTechnical Practices (Theoretical, Precise, Artistic)Troubleshooting Physical Effort: Frequently handles objects that weigh up to 50 pounds. Utilizes hoists, holders, and pulleys that are operated when moving larger components. May be required to make repairs and installations from ladders, scaffolding, and platforms where the parts or systems worked on are frequently in hard-to-reach places. Walking, stooping, stretching, bending, and kneeling are frequently done for long periods. Working Conditions: Work is performed inside, frequently in cramped and awkward positions; shop area is usually adequately heated and ventilated but often floors are of concrete. Work is frequently dirty and greasy; variable temperatures occur when working in cold storage rooms; subject to possible injuries such as cuts, bruises, burns and electrical shock; possible respiratory disorders due to inhalation of refrigerant gases. Uncomfortable face masks and protective clothing may be worn when there is a possibility of exposure to toxic refrigerants. Subject to abnormal noise and temperature. The presence of high pressure air lines, 440 and 2400 volt electrical lines and direct contact with moving machinery create hazards.
