This position is located in the Chemistry Branch of a Field Services Laboratory, Office of Public Health and Science (OPHS). The incumbent supervises the technical operations of the chemistry unit with responsibility for such major areas as veterinary drug residue and environmental contaminant analysis in meat, poultry and egg products; compliance activities, and adherence with laboratory accreditation requirements.
Duties
Supervise a team of chemists, physical science technicians and related fields in a high throughput analytical laboratory that provides technical expertise and support to other offices within FSIS and other governmental agencies.
Actively create an environment that promotes diversity, inclusion, and collaboration.
Execute a quality control program to ensure that all testing meets or exceeds the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 17025
Provide scientific expertise in chemistry to plan, develop, and update laboratory methods to meet the needs and priorities of the agency's chemistry testing programs.
Prepare and present oral and written reports on program assignments to agency officials, and at scientific meetings.
Work with the laboratory director and other officials planning, coordinating long-range objectives and resolving problems related to the inspection of meat, poultry, siluriformes, and egg products to protect the health of the consumer.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements (including time-in-grade restrictions, specialized experience and/or education) by the closing date of the announcement.
In addition to the specialized experience requirement, you must meet a basic requirement to qualify. You can meet the basic requirement with the following education or combination of education and experience:
Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
Combination of education and experience -- course work equivalent to a major as shown in A above, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Specialized experience: Your resume must show that you have one year of experience at the GS-12 grade in the following:
Performing multi-analyte chemical analyses using sensitive instrumentation. Your resume must show in detail the types of analyses you have performed and the instruments you have used.
Developing or modifying methods to perform chemical testing and identifying the need to develop new testing methods and approaches.
Working within an established quality management system (for example, ISO 17025).
Writing laboratory documents. This may include standard operating procedures (SOP), quality assurance records or reports of findings.

Time-in-grade: You must have completed 52 weeks at the GS-12 grade to be eligible.
