This position is open only to current employees of the Department of Veterans Affairs. The Chief Sterile for Sterile Processing Services (SPS) is considered to be the medical center expert with respect to sterile processing and the procedures required to provide quality patient care. The Chief Nurse for SPS is the senior leader in the management team and will be responsible for the oversight of the service.

Duties

The Chief Nurse IV is responsible for all activities that occur in the department. The chief periodically checks the quality of the work being produced on each tour. The chief serves as the reusable medical equipment (RME) processing expert and reports to management and key committees including the environment of care, infection prevention, RME purchasing. Additionally, the Chief Nurse will ensure quality control measures and evaluates completed work for overall technical requirements and conformance to agency policies through competency assessment utilizing simulation, direct observation and verbal responses. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Nurse IV Qualifications: Master's degree in Nursing (MSN) and 4 years of professional nursing experience, one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse III and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse IV or, Master's degree in a related field with a Bachelor's degree in Nursing (BSN) with 4 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse III and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse IV , OR Doctorate degree in nursing and 3 years of professional nursing experience, one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse III and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse IV. or Doctorate degree in a related field and a MSN or BSN, with approximately 3 years of professional nursing experience one of which is specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse III and meets all dimension requirements for Nurse IV. Nursing education must be from a school of profession nursing accredited by one of the following accrediting organizations at the time the program was completed by the applicant. The Accreditation Commission for Education (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). you are a graduate of a foreign school of professional nursing, possession of a current, full active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing who possess a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing to warrant appointment as a Nurse who has completed an associate degree Level Nursing education program. In order to grant credit towards an appointment based on foreign nursing education higher than the associate degree level, formal degree equivalency accepted by VA such as the International Consultants of Delaware (ICD) must be obtained. Professional Nursing experience: specialized nursing experience equivalent to Nurse III.Executes position responsibilities that demonstrate leadership, experience and creative approaches to management of complex client care beyond the immediate practice setting. Grandfathering Provision. All persons employed in VHA in this occupational series and performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of this qualification standard (January 29,2024) are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held including positive education and licensure/certification. Physical Requirements: You must be able to perform work that requires regular and recurrent bending, lifting 30 pounds or more, stooping, climbing, twisting and/or bending, standing and/or walking almost constantly during the course of the day, reaching above the shoulder, stretching, and similar activities supporting various weights; walking and standing for 8 hours; frequent pushing medication carts, wheelchairs, litters, beds; use of fingers, both hands and both legs; emotional stability (you must be able to care for Veterans with various medical and psychiatric illnesses who at times may exhibit unpredictable behavior and may have the potential to be physically or verbally assaultive); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" / far vision correctable in one eye to 20/50 and to 20/100 in the other / both eyes required with ability to distinguish basic colors; hearing aid permitted in order to sufficiently hear various alarms and respond immediately
