This is a Direct Hire Authority (DHA) solicitation utilizing the DHA for Certain Personnel of the DoD Workforce to recruit and appoint qualified candidates to positions in the competitive service.
About the Position: Serves as a Nursing Assistant in a Forward Care Element/Troop Medical Clinic of an initial entry training battalion.
Duties
Provides personal patient care, assists physician assistants and nurse practitioners during examination and treatment of adult patients, and performs a variety of duties auxiliary to patient care services.
Measures and records blood pressure, pulse, respiration, temperature, height and weight and vital signs input and output.
Screens and documents notes, vital signs measurements, and other patient data in various electronic medical records systems.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Tier 1 - Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- This position is subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations. Applicants tentatively selected for this position will be required to sign a statement consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- All Health Care Providers must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) training and certification that is sponsored or endorsed by the American Heart Association (AHA).
- Current Advanced Life Support or other advanced certification does not supersede BLS completion.
- A pre-placement medical examination is required.
- This position is a Testing Designated Position (TDP) subject to a pre-employment drug screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.
- This position is covered by Health Affairs Policy 97006, 23 Oct. 96, which requires the employee to obtain Hepatitis B Immunization unless exempted by a physician.
- Employee will possess a valid driver's license, and fulfill requirements for driving a military vehicle, as needed.
- Employee will be required to wear and use personal protective equipment as required and provided by the employer.
- The work requires the employee to work evenings/nights; rotating shifts, extended hours, weekends, holidays or other schedules common to hospital operations.
- Duty hours are subject to adjustment, i.e., may include early morning and late night hours, if duty location is in support of training.

In order to qualify, you must meet the experience and/or education requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. General and/or Specialized Experience: Six months of general experience (1) in any type of work that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work of the position, or (2) experience that provided a familiarity with nonprofessional nursing care work in a hospital, outpatient clinic, nursing home, or other medical, nursing, or patient care facility, OR in such work as that of a home health aid performing duties such as: (A) Providing personal nursing care such as providing pre- and post-operative care, (B) Support duties for diagnostic and technical treatment procedures, such as setting up and operating special medical equipment and apparatus, (C) Caring for mentally ill patients, including observing, recording, and reporting changes in their behavior, and providing reassurance and encouragement, (D) Assisting surgeons and registered nurses in operating room activities, including passing instruments, maintaining sterile conditions, and draping and positioning patients AND six months of specialized experience which includes providing personal patient care such as: 1) Assisting physician assistants and nurse practitioners during examination and treatment of adult patients, 2) Measure patient's vital signs, and 3) Screening/updating patient medical records. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-03).

Education: Successful completion of a 2-year degree program in an accredited community college, junior college, or college or university in practical nursing or in a field of study appropriate to the specialization of the position, such as education in a program for a psychology, psychiatric, or operating room technician.

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education by 60. Add the two percentages.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of
Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-03).

Education
