About the Position: Works as a member of the Maintenance and Repair Unit in a field site situation. Incumbent will apply a range of equipment repair and painting skills and techniques pertinent to the dismantling, repair, modification, maintenance, aligning and installing of machinery and painting of structures.

Duties

Equipment Repair: Performs work to diagnose, layout, install, align, repair, overhaul and maintain equipment or fixtures which are a portion of a major system of a lock and dam operating facility. Replacing, reworking, or refinishing worn or damaged parts and components. Reassembling and installing equipment or parts and accomplishes necessary alignment and testing. Abrasive Blasting: Works as an abrasive media blaster responsible for abrasive blast cleaning of a variety of structures, equipment, and machinery. Painting: Applies protective prime coat and/or finish coat of paint to surface areas which have been recently prepared for paint. Deckhand: Work on floating plant units consisting of a cutterhead pipeline dredge, barge-mounted cranes, and tugboats. Connects, disconnects, repairs and replaces pipelines; assists in breaking up and making up tow. Engineering Equipment Operator: Operates aerial towers (powered personnel lifts), tractor-mounted end-loader, bulldozers, small/large excavators, skid loaders, cranes, steam pressure cleaning equipment, and air compressors.

Requirements

  • Business travel up to 75% of the time.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • The position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program.
  • This position requires successful completion of a pre-employment physical examination.
  • Must be able to lift, carry, and set up equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds.
  • Requires shift work to provide coverage on evenings, weekends, holidays, or special situations. Will be required to work varying shifts and varying schedules.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Marine Machinery Mechanic without more than normal supervision. I have the ability to perform common duties including equipment repair, abrasive blasting, painting, deckhand tasks, and operating engineering equipment. Repair and replace worn parts, perform abrasive blasting on structures and machinery, apply paint coatings, handle ropes and towing cables, and operate various equipment such as cherry pickers, loaders, bulldozers, and more. Additional responsibilities may include steam cleaning, air compressors operation, and performing trades work like carpentry and cement finishing. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. I work under supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who reviews my work for completion. I can perform the above duties. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision Screen Out, Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading), Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment, KNOWLEDGE OF EQUIPMENT ASSEMBLY, INSTALLATION, REPAIR, ETC., Knowledge of Materials, Technical Practices (theoretical, precise, artistic), and Trouble shooting (Electronic Equipment) Physical Effort: Work requires continual physical effort in the handling of equipment and tools, while working from scaffolds, standing, stooping, bending, kneeling; reaching, climbing, working overhead, crawling and crouching in strained and/or awkward positions often for prolonged periods while blasting, painting, or otherwise working on structures sometimes at heights up to 55 feet. In addition to work from an aerial tower "cage", employee is required to possess agility in order to work from ladders, scaffolds, platforms, or other stagings, and is required to lift, carry, and set up equipment or materials weighing up to 75 pounds and occasionally up to 100 pounds. Handling of blasting hose requires control of 110 psi pressure. Working Conditions: Performs work primarily outdoors, but also inside. Outdoor work is subject to temperature and other weather extremes typical of the local climate. Inside work is performed inside miter gate enclosures, valve gate recesses, tainter gate recesses, tainter or roller dam gates, or other enclosed or semi-enclosed locations which subject the worker to fumes,dust or other unpleasant environment. Work is performed from scaffolding, permanently installed walkways and platforms or ladders above ground level, and, in many instances, above water thus subjecting employee to injuries associated with falls and water. Other exposure to heat, dust, rust, scale, abrasives, paint fumes is present with the possibility of eye injury, electrical shock, burns, broken bones and cuts being present. Some discomfort from protective clothing, gloves, or other equipment is normal.
