The Battle Creek VA Medical Center is recruiting for a Utility Systems Operator. The Utility Systems Operator will function under the Facilities Management Service.
Duties
The duties of the position may include but, are not limited to:
The USO is responsible fi.)r safe operation of the Boiler/Combined Heating and Power (CHP) Plant, including maintenance and repair.
When on duty at other than normal business hours, the USO has full responsibility fi)l' the safe and efficient operation of the Energy Center and is responsible for assigned duties/tasks of the shift.
The USO will be able to start, operate, and stop all systems within the Energy Center.
The USO will also be able to perform various repairs on multiple systems within the plant.
The combined systems require constant attention to maintain efficiency a11d control the formation of pollutants.
The USO will maintain efficient combustion levels and ensure compliance with air pollution laws or regulations.
Through the use of manual and automatic control systems, USO's monitor, adjust, and control all phases of boiler plant operations.
The USO will be required to change fuel sources in both plants if required, from natural gas to fuel oil in the boiler plant or from woodchips to natural gas in the CHP plant.
The USO follows written and verbal instructions supplied by the Energy Center Supervisor or by the USO on the previous shift.
Work Schedule: 6 - 12 hour shifts, 1 - 8 hour shifts and 7 days off / alternating

Physical Requirements: USOs frequently work in confined areas in and around boilers and support equipment (i.e., auxiliary and pollution control equipment). The work requires moderate to strenuous effort m1d long periods of walking, standing, climbing, bending and crouching. USOs frequently lift and carry parts and chemical supplies weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and occasionally items over 40 pounds with assistance of other workers or weight handling equipment.
