Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status and will be for a period not-to-exceed 1039 hours in a service year.

Duties

This position serves as temporary seasonal Physical Science Technician for the Canyon Country District. Coordinates with other resource specialists and technicians in phases of projects or operations. Surveys field sites for data and other information using various instruments for entry in databases and/or geospatial automated information systems in support of the hydrology and other resource programs Makes field observations, performs tests, collects and records hydrological data, adapting procedures according to unexpected situations and conditions encountered. Analyzes hydrological data from recording instruments and automated databases. Prepares a variety of charts, graphs, illustrations, figures and reports for data analysis and technical publications. Provides technical support and answers inquiries involving practical knowledge of hydrology.

Qualifications

Selective Placement Factors: This position requires a special qualification that has been determined to be essential to perform the duties and will be used as a screen out element. Those who do not provide evidence they possess the following selective factor(s) will be rated not qualified: Possess (or obtain within 30 days of entrance on duty) and maintain a valid state driver's license while employed in this position. In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the qualification requirements - please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To qualify at the GS-07 level you must meet the following: Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 level equivalent in difficulty and complexity to perform the duties of a Physical Science Technician. Qualifying specialized experience includes: independently conducting field surveys using various instruments and computer programs to collect hydrological data; coordinating with other resource specialists, scientists, and/or technicians in the collection and/or analysis of data; analyzing collected data; preparing a variety of charts, graphs, illustrations, figures and reports for data analysis and technical publications; making recommendations to improve practices and procedures in data collection. OR Education: To qualify based on education you must have one (1) full year (18 semester hours) of graduate-level education in a related field of study. OR Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the difficulty and complexity to do the work of this position. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of the announcement. Physical Demands: The work is a mixture of sedentary work in the office and field work that involves some physical exertion, such as long periods of standing; walking over rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; possibly recurring bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities; or requiring lifting of moderately heavy items. Work Environment: The work involves a mixture of work in the office which is well lit, heated, and air conditioned and where normal safety precautions are adequate, and work in the field under conditions of inclement weather or other discomforts where normal safety precautions must be observed.

Applicants may qualify for these positions based on experience, education, or an equivalent combination as described in the Qualifications section of this announcement.

Graduate education or an internship meets the specialized experience required above GS-5 only in those instances where it is directly related to the work of the position. One full year of graduate education meets the requirements for GS-7.
