This position functions as an Automotive Mechanic for Engineering Service, VA North Texas Health Care System, Dallas, TX. This position will normally be set on first shift schedule but could be assigned various shifts depending on program needs. Flow of work assignments will from Fleet General Supervisor and/or through the Operations Supervisor.

Duties

This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until August 30, 2024. Duties include, but are not limited to: Troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, and overhauls a variety of portable and stationary engine powered equipment; heavy duty systems, assemblies, and parts, including major systems, such as, diesel and gasoline engines; automatic and manual transmissions and gear reduction systems; driveline assemblies including differentials, power dividers, and dual speed axles; hydraulic lifting, loading, turning, and positioning systems including their mechanical, hydraulic and electric controls. Diagnoses and corrects defects arising in all internal combustion engines including emergency diesel driven generators, tractors, lawn mowers, diesel engines, and all related equipment. Incumbent performs assigned tasks independently with help only on unusual or difficult situations. Occasionally, directs a maintenance worker assigned to work with the mechanic on special assignments where it is necessary for more than one man. to accomplish a job. Responds to calls at various hours when automotive and mechanical equipment failure warrants overtime work. Disassembles, repairs and reassembles the complete prime mover. This includes completely overhauls the engine, including piston rings, pistons, valves, bearings, cylinder walls, engine head reconditioning and all related auxiliaries; such as carburetor, ignition, timing sequence, power level development, and fuel injection and compression systems used on diesel prime mover. Repairs transmission, final drive assembly, steering mechanisms, brakes and all auxiliaries used on all VA owned self propelled equipment. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 08/30/2024. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Working conditions: outside and inside, excessive heat, excessive cold, excessive humidity, excessive dampness or chilling, Dry atmosphere conditions, excessive noise (intermittent), dust, silicia, asbestos, etc, solvents (degreasing agents), slippery or uneven walking surfaces, working around machinery with moving parts, working around moving objects or vehicles, working on ladders or scaffolding, working below ground, working alone.
