This position is located at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, Division of Nursing Services, Perioperative Services Department, Gallup, NM. Assistant Supervisory Nurse is responsible for supervising, managing, directing, coordinating, providing leadership, and evaluating the provision of nursing care provided in the Operating Room, PACU, Outpatient Surgery and CSR. The position reports to the Perioperative Supervisory Nurse.
Duties

As Assistant Supervisory Nurse, supervises, manages, coordinates and evaluates the nursing program for Perioperative Unit. Organizes, directs, reviews work, administers personnel matters, counseling, disciplinary action, scheduling, and overall management activities.
Develops and implements Nursing Standards of Care, includes compliance with accreditation and certification requirements. Maintains records for patient assignments, census, and chart reviews. This includes orientation of each employees as competency, evaluation, training, safety, infection control, and compliance with mandatory orientation requirements.
Collaborates with all subordinates, peers, superiors, internal and external customers to achieve the goals and missions of the facility and the Indian Health Service.
Performs a wide range of nursing care for patients in all age groups and their families who present an unlimited range of different health related problems. Observes and assesses the patient's clinical condition - conditions and interprets data from the patient's history and physical assessment. Based on interpretation of data, decides appropriate Nursing action to be taken. Informs the physician of the patient's status. Operates and monitors specialized equipment. Administers therapeutic measures as prescribed by the physician.
Initiates treatments, medications, emergency and resuscitative measures based on appropriate utilization of physician orders, standing orders, and post anesthesia protocols.
Maintains a variety of unit records, supplies and other related activities as Performance Improvement, nursing personnel, FTEs, equipment, supply purchases, travel and serving on the hospital committees assuring effective cross department communication.

Qualifications

BASIC REQUIREMENT(S):
Education: A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing. A graduate or higher level degree, bachelor's degree, associate degree, or diploma from an accredited professional nursing educational program is required. This education must have been accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education , Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Educational Programs, Accreditation Commission for Midwifery Education, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained.
Degree from Foreign Nursing School: Official certification from the Commission on Graduates of Foreign Nursing Schools is required for individuals who graduated from foreign nursing schools.
Licensure: For all grade levels and positions, applicants must have passed the National Council Licensure Examination. In addition, they must possess a current, active, full, and unrestricted license or registration as a professional nurse from a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.
Experience: The work experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. At the GS-10 and above grade level, many positions may require experience in a specialty area of nursing.
Basic Requirements for the GS-11 (or equivalent) Grade Level: In addition to the above requirements, applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
Successful completion of a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree from a professional nursing educational program or related medical science field; or
At least one full year of professional nursing experience (equivalent to the GS-09 grade level) and possession of a diploma, associate degree, bachelor's degree, or master's degree from a professional nursing educational program.
In addition to the Basic Requirements, you must also meet the Minimum Qualifications stated below.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
GS-11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector performing the following type of work and/or tasks: Knowledge of nursing concepts, skills and principles necessary to provide professional services including; assisting with all aspects of managing the Operating Room, and assisting in Same Day Surgery, Post-Anesthesia Care Unit, and Central Supply Unit. Provide leadership, direction, and technical expertise in the planning, development, implementation, and evaluation of the delivery of nursing services for the benefit and provision of safe comprehensive care. Demonstrated management, administrative and supervisory skills necessary to effectively manage nursing services and prioritize these services according to patient needs and outcomes.

Time In Grade
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade Requirements: Merit Promotion (status) candidates must have completed one year of service at the next lower grade level. Time-In-Grade provisions do not apply under the Excepted Service Examining Plan (ESEP).
