About the Position: You will serve as a Welder (Deckhand) with the Army Corps of Engineers, Detroit District, Detroit Operations Division, Detroit, MI. While performing a wide variety of Welding (Deckhand) duties involved in operations, maintenance and repairs of facilities, equipment, structures, buildings which requires the use of various trade practices.
Duties
Welds a wide variety of metals, including alloys such as stainless steel.
Cuts driven sheet steel piling to proper elevation as indicated by supervisor using acetylene cutting torch.
Cleans and prepares surfaces for welding, uses flux as required, and chips, grinds, files, and buffs completed welds, using hand and machine tools.
Cuts threads on bolts and pipe using stocks and dies or power threading machine.
Works with deck crew in making repairs to steering gear and machinery by doing the manual labor.
Operates deck winches or towing engines when required.
Prepares metal and wood surfaces for painting by scraping, chipping, or with paint remover.
Assists in concrete pouring operations as puddler, and tamps concrete by use of pneumatic vibrator.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Incumbent must possess American Welding Society (AWS) Code D1.1 (Horizontal/Vertical/Overhead Positions) AWS WELDERS CERTIFICATION REQUIRED.
- This position requires a pre-employment and annual physical exam due to the physical requirement of the position.
- This position is covered by the Civilian Drug Abuse Testing Program. Incumbent is required to sign a DA Form 5019-R "Condition of Employment for Certain Civilian Positions Identified as Critical under the Drug Abuse Testing Program".

However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.
Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a(n) Welder (Deckhand) without more than normal supervision. I am independently performed as journeyman Welder (Deckhand), all of the following duties. I provide welder instructions to others when needed in the following duties: operation of electric and acetylene gas welding equipment; complete penetration, as well as fusion of base and filler metals; weld in positions to include flat, horizontal, vertical and overhead; brazing, soldering, flame and arc- cutting, surface hardening, annealing and metal spraying; handle mooring line; act as a wheelman. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.
Physical Effort: Work requires continuous physical effort, working in awkward positions, and working in one position for long periods of time while welding; heavy lifting is required occasionally.
Working Conditions: Usually works outside, exposed to all kinds of weather; is exposed to danger of physical injuries working around floating derricks, operating power equipment and tools, and from working on heavy equipment: is exposed to eye injuries and burns from flying sparks while welding, grinding and forging; and to danger of falling from marine structures of floating plant and drowning. The floating plant rate is justified since the work occurs primarily aboard our crane barge working on or adjacent to harbor structures. This job requires the incumbent to perform all the tasks expected of a journeyman Welder as well as all the duties required of a Deckhand. As such, he is an integral and essential part of the deck crew. He is subject to seasonal lay-off after the operating season and/or the floating plant has gone through winter lay-up.
