This position is located in the A/C shop, Facilities Management Service of the Edward Hines Jr Veterans Administration Hospital, Hines, IL. The purpose of this is to provide maintenance support to HVAC shop.
Duties
Major Duties:
Installs, replaces and repairs larger, more complex systems ranging from window air conditioners, heaters, chillers, ice/water machines, walk-in coolers, freezers, milk coolers, display cases, cold top servers, larger residential and commercial units, and other refrigeration systems in various facilities, to include hospitals, laboratories, communication centers, office buildings, and others.
Controls complicated motors such as analog/electronic, enthalpy/econcycle, JCI Metasys/Extended Architectural interface, CRC interface as well as others new and old as used and installed by varying manufacturers.
Analyzes and corrects troublesome conditions in the shortest possible time.
Improvises ways and means to keep the station functioning in the event of a breakdown, until use of equipment can be restored.
Determines the cause of the equipment malfunctions and makes the appropriate repairs.
Discusses parts replacement with the supervisor, obtains price quotes, delivery costs and times and prepares the appropriate purchase request form for approval.
Performs other related duties as assigned.

Physical Requirements: The incumbent is required to regularly perform duties which involve climbing stairs, c1imbing ladders, kneeling, stooping, bending, reaching, working from scaffolds and catwalks and lifting and carrying heavy objects. The incumbent frequently carries and sets up parts and equipment that weigh up to 50 pounds. Hoists, holders, and pulleys are operated when removing units such as large compressors, condensers, and chillers. Required to wear and work while wearing self contained breathing apparatus whenever the possibility of exposure to a discharge of refrigerant ·gases exists. Required to wear and work while wearing an appropriate respirator in areas under respiratory isolation.
Working Conditions: The incumbent is regularly required to work out of doors, drafty attic spaces, cramped areas with low overheads, and on the roofs of buildings exposed to extremes of temperature and inclement weather. Regularly exposed to indoor temperature extremes and required to work with high pressure steam, high pressure water and hot water. The incumbent is also regularly required to perform duties which involve potential exposure to oxygen depleting refrigerant gases, dangerous chemicals, harmful vapors and harmful fumes. Noise levels in the work areas are high, sometimes requiring the use of hearing protection equipment :frequently required to work in areas occupied by patients known or believed to be suffering from infectious diseases. The incumbent may be regularly exposed to the possibility of bums, cuts, bruises, scrapes and falls.
