This position is located in Engineering Service with the VA Palo Alto Health Care System. The Painter applies paint, varnish, lacquer, shellac, epoxy resin, teflon, and other coating materials on wood, metal, glass, synthetic, concrete and other surfaces.

Duties

Major Duties include and may not be limited to: - Redecorating offices, wards, corridors, dining halls, living quarters, and shop buildings; - Painting and refinishing furniture, wood and metal, such as desks, cabinets, chairs, operating room and laundry equipment; - Glazing and caulking windows on air conditioning equipment, cutting and installing glass; - Installing vinyl wall coverings, hanging paper, etc.; - Cutting stencil, painting signs and blending and mixing colors; - Preparing coating material by tinting, toning, matching, blending, and mixing various additives; - Applying special finishing techniques such as marbling and graining; and - Performing other related duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Tour of duty varies based on facility needs. Position Description Title/PD#: Painter/PD06043A Physical Requirements: Work requires good coordination and good physical condition. Required to walk, stand, stoop, bend, kneel, climb, crawl and work in uncomfortable positions and to pull, push, reach over the shoulder and lift supplies and/or equipment weighing up to 100 pounds. Must have rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously, good hearing, depth perception and the ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors. Work is both outside and inside in areas of medium to excessive heat, cold, humidity, dampness or chilling areas that have intermittent noise, dust, fumes, grease, dirt, oils, with exposure to electrical wires and energy. Areas may be slippery and/or uneven surfaces, in equipment rooms, tunnels, crawls spaces, confined spaces, penthouses, overhead catwalks, scaffolding and/or in tight areas such as manholes and electrical equipment closets.
