Practice as a registered professional nurse means the full scope of nursing, with or without compensation, that incorporates caring for all patients in all settings, through nursing standards recognized by the Division, and includes all of the following and other activities requiring a like skill level for which the registered professional nurse is properly trained.

Duties

* The incumbant will administer a full range of immunizations and provide medical information to those traveling overseas. * Utilizing your experience and education, you will respond to medical emergencies, provide emergency medical assessments and interventions independently, plus inspect and maintain emergency supplies and equipment. * You will also be involved in implementing health education programs to comply with federal regulations and to meet organizational needs. This entails conducting and supporting OSHA mandated programs, administering spirometric testing, hearing exams, etc., in addition to providing individual counseling to employees on disease prevention and health promotion. * Occupational Health Nurses support clinical requirements as mission needs mandate and are expected to maintain required certifications along with knowledge, skills and expertise through professional development activities. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: The comprehensive nursing assessment of the health status of patients that addresses changes to patient conditions. The development of a plan of nursing care to be integrated within the patient-centered health care plan that establishes nursing diagnoses and setting goals to meet identified health care needs, determining nursing interventions, and implementation of nursing care through the execution of nursing strategies and regimens ordered or prescribed by authorized healthcare professionals. The administration of medication or delegation of medication administration to licensed practical nurses or medication aides in a qualified facility (see Section 80-20 of the Act). Delegation of nursing interventions to implement the plan of care. The provision for the maintenance of safe and effective nursing care rendered directly or through delegation. Advocating for patients. The evaluation of responses to interventions and the effectiveness of the plan of care. Communicating and collaborating with other health care professionals. The procurement and application of new knowledge and technologies. The provision of health education and counseling. Participating in development of policies, procedures and systems to support patient safety. The Occupational Health RN may be utilized in PACT clinics and the Laboratory to collect specimens. He/She is held accountable for delivering direct patient care to adult through geriatric Veterans for both acute and chronic diseases in an outpatient clinic setting. S/he recognizes age related needs and demonstrates knowledge and care appropriate to those age groups. S/he considers the cognitive, physical, emotional, and chronological maturation needs of patients and demonstrates competence in doing so. Observes and reports changes in patients' physical and emotional conditions utilizing elements of the nursing process of signs and symptoms identification, observation, perception, clinical measurements, screening protocols, and prescribed history taking. Reporting mechanisms include standardized electronic and manual documentation, with a major emphasis on computer data entry, as well as telephone, fax, and oral communication with community and VA providers and their support Services. Performs health history screenings per pre-formatted documentation, e.g. ambulatory care 10-10, prevention notes, and clinical reminders. Screens, intervenes, and follows through for acute/chronic medical and emotional conditions for adult through geriatric populations with minimal supervision of a provider. Implements basic RN procedures as defined by policies and procedures of the Illiana Health Care System. Performs patient education and documentation for prevention, healthier lifestyle, functionality, and disease management factors. Effectively demonstrates ability to gather data and observations, assist in planning, implementing, documenting and evaluating the care of patients seen in the outpatient care setting. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency. In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). The approving official may authorize a waiver of the requirement for ACEN or CCNE accreditation of any degree in nursing provided the college or university has regional accreditation from an accrediting body recognized by the Department of Education at the time of the candidate's graduation and the composite qualifications of the applicant warrant such consideration. In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. OR The completion of coursework equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6) OR In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of a current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement for graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Preferred Experience: 2-3 years RN experience and occupational health experience preferred. Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met in determining the grade assignment of candidates, and if appropriate, the level within a grade: Nurse I Level I - An Associate Degree (ADN) or Diploma in Nursing, with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse I Level II - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 1 year of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelor's degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience; OR a Bachelor's of Science in Nursing (BSN) with no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse I Level III - An ADN or Diploma in Nursing and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR an ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a BSN with approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing (MSN) or related field with a BSN and no additional nursing practice/experience. Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a Bachelor's degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approximately 1-2 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no additional nursing practice/experience required. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience; OR a Doctoral degree and approximately 2-3 years of nursing practice/experience. Note regarding MSN degrees: If your MSN was obtained via a Bridge Program that qualifies for professional nursing registration, a BSN is not required. Reference: VA Regulations, specifically VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G-6 Nurse Qualification Standard. This can be found in the local Human Resources Office. Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.
