The incumbent has the responsibility of maintaining a pest free environment throughout the interiors of 12 major buildings, as well as implementing a tailored Integrated Pest Management Plan for interior pest control at the James A. Haley VA Medical Center.

Duties

The incumbent selects the type of pesticides to use, taking into account the pest, environment and general activity of the area, the treatment schedules, procedures and methods to be followed. The incumbent locates, recognizes and exterminates a variety of common pests and insects such as ants, flies, cockroaches, mice, rats, silverfish, etc., by visual inspections and evidence of their presence. Major duties include but are limited to: Follows all Federal, State, Local, and Medical Center directives that are pertinent to an effective Integrated Pest Management Program. Utilize hand sprayers, electric foggers, electric dusters, hand dusters, and other techniques as prescribed. Perform routine maintenance, cleaning, and properly storing of all equipment used for pest control. Selects, mixes, and applies restricted and general use pesticides necessary for treatment. Evaluate equipment and chemicals, and to set priorities according to need, hazard, and protection of the environment, without professional or supervisor guidance. Advises management and facility support personnel on aspects of pest management and control. Recognize typical health and safety hazards for you and other coworker and patients around you. Certification is required- Incumbent will attain and maintain a current certification or pesticide applicator's permit through the State of Florida, in compliance with CFR Title 40 and any state or local requirement or other accredited sources. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Physical Requirements: The Pest Controller often lifts and handles materials weighing over fifty (SO) pounds and carries chemical solutions and equipment weighing up to forty (40) pounds for extended periods. Occasionally works in cramped and inconvenient surroundings requiring the handling of equipment in awkward positions. Work frequently requires standing, stooping, bending, kneeling, climbing and working in tiring and uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Frequently moves furniture and equipment to accomplish their tasks. Working Conditions: Work is generally performed indoors although sometimes performed outside. Work is often accomplished in structural areas with minimum ventilation and/or limited access. Mixes chemical compounds and applies pesticides while wearing respirators, gloves, and personal protective equipment designed to nullity the risk of exposure to toxic dust and sprays which might damage their health. Damage to health may occur if appropriate safety procedures are not followed. Discomfort may be experienced while wearing protective clothing, respirators, goggles or face masks for extended periods of time. Incumbent may be exposed to poisonous insects, reptiles, plants and wild rabid animals. There is a constant possibility of exposure to toxic vapors, liquids and powders due to frequent use of chemicals. Therefore, incumbent is required to undergo a bi-annual cholinesterase test to ensure that cholinesterase levels are within normal limits. This test is to ensure that the incumbent has not been exposed to a toxic level of pesticide that would result in an occupational illness. (NOTE: Cholinesterase is an enzyme that affects the nervous system and voluntary muscles.)
