The position works as a Housekeeping Aid Supervisor within the Environmental Management Service (EMS). He/she works at the Stockton location of the VA Northern California Health Care System (VA NCHCS) and is responsible for supervising and performing all housekeeping duties and tasks assigned to clean and disinfect all areas within the healthcare system.

Duties

The Housekeeping Aid Supervisor, WS-3556-02, works within Environmental Management Service assigned to the Stockton Division of the VA Northern California Health Care System. They are is responsible for supervising the cleaning and disinfecting of all facilities leaving them in an aseptic condition to include clinics, inpatient care units, surgical care units, laboratories, restrooms, offices, lobby, lounges, locker rooms, stairwells, elevators, corridors, visitor rooms, storage rooms, outpatient clinics, etc. They may also assume the duties of the laundry supervisor on an as needed basis. Also, they retrieves linen from the linen room for use by wards or clinics as needed or assists his/her employees in retrieving linen from storage locations. Duties for the position include but are not limited to: Plans and organizes daily and weekly manpower utilization by assigning daily assignments in specific or overall areas. Establishes and plans procedural work routines for employees to follow in normal cleaning assignments as well as setting priorities for work accomplishment. Provides employees with, and determines, work to be performed by individuals, teams or detail groups, based on availability of equipment, employees, and materials required. Supervises and assists with operations and maintenance of equipment, materials and supplies belonging to the service. Maintains established standards and procedures as defined in the service procedure manual. Explains work requirement and methods, as required, and defines work quality and quantity standards; provides instructions on difficult work assignment or operations, reviews work in progress and upon completion, accepts, amends or rejects work efforts, modifies work plans assignment and/ or methods to reduce or control cost to accomplish unit(s) work as efficiently as possible. Makes adjustment to work assignment to cover emergent work requirements. Responsible for all equipment checked out to employees to ensure that equipment is safe to use and in working condition; ensures that checked out equipment is returned clean and places in designated storage area. Works to achieve personnel program policies and goals, i.e. labor management, position management classification, merit promotion, career development, and incentive awards, etc. Promotes subordinate's participation in management programs, explains and gains support for subordinate's reaction and suggestions, schedules and approves subordinates leave requests and verifies accuracy of subordinate's subsidiary time records. Records time worked in different areas, i.e. medical, surgery, clinics and admissions for EMS staffing guidelines. Develops performance standards, appraises subordinates on performance standards, prepares formal assessments of work performance, counsel's subordinates, conducts fact finding for informal complaints and grievances through discussion with employees and/or union representatives. Initiates appropriate disciplinary action and makes recommendations or personnel actions to HR i.e. promotion, reassignment, awards, demotions, and suspensions. Monitors and enforces subordinate's adherence to safety, conduct, rules of behavior, policies, regulations, and follows guidelines for filling ECOMP (workers compensation/Injury) claims. Conducts weekly written sanitation inspections and submits to their immediate supervisor for use in the Medical Center Quality Assurance evaluation program. Responsible for maintaining aseptic conditions throughout all areas of the hospital, clinics, administrative areas, and support areas belonging to the healthcare system, whether working alone or setting the pace for those he/she leads. Responsible for performing all housekeeping duties and tasks assigned to clean and disinfect all areas within the healthcare system. Maintains housekeeping closet in a clean and orderly fashion, ensuring the proper type and measure of supplies are in stock. Notes condition of rooms and reports to supervisor items in need of repair, i.e., water leaks, clogged drains, holes in walls, and other conditions requiring maintenance or repair. Notifies supervisor when supplies and equipment are needed or when equipment needs repair or replacement. Performs other related duties as assigned by their supervisor. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: Dexterity in teaching the operation of power equipment. Some heavy lifting (supplies, equipment, and materials), movement of furniture are required along with the stamina to perform physical labor. Must be able to independently move up to 50-pound objects, and push/pull carts weighing several hundred pounds with a push/pull resistance of up to 50 pounds. Incumbent must be able to lift and handle heavy objects that weigh up to 50 pounds while installing, repairing, or assembling various fixtures. Required to stand, crawl, stoop, kneel, and climb on scaffolds, ladders, and reach over and around mechanical equipment on wet slippery surfaces, in cramped uncomfortable positions for extended periods. Required to sit, lean, and lift throughout the hospital. Continuous unassisted walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and arduous physical effort is required in the performance of the manual tasks described; such as sweeping, mopping, cleaning restroom facilities, high/low dusting, washing walls above five feet and operating powered equipment over extended periods.
