The employee will serve as a Research Health Science Specialist in Durham VA Medical Center, in Durham, NC.
Duties

NOTE: This is a TERM appointment (not-to-exceed 3 years). Term appointments are non-status, nonpermanent appointments of limited duration (more than 1 year but not more than 4). Term employees are eligible to earn leave and generally have the same benefits as permanent employees including health and life insurance, within-grade increases and Federal Employees Retirement System and Thrift Savings Plan coverage. Term appointments may be extended without further competition (up to the 4-year maximum). The appointment to a Term position does not confer eligibility for promotion or reassignment to other positions or the ability to be non-competitively converted to permanent employment.
Duties include, but may not be limited to the following:
Collect and manage data, suitable for publication and future references.
Maintain and present all regulatory binders, standard operating procedures, research and related records.
Implement study protocol(s) according to approved research committee documents.
Liaise with research service (clinical, training), other program managers, data scientists and others to contribute to the development of short and long-term research goals.
Participate in strategic planning efforts with local and national stakeholders to achieve program objectives.
Coordinate with other people to enhance research study enrollment.
Assist in budget development, authorize purchases related to study activities, monitor budgets and make recommendations related to budget items.
Manage day-to-day operations of projects for the study portfolio, inclusive of budget, staffing, ordering supplies and prioritizing day-to-day activities for study staff.
Provide technical assistance to increase protocol effectiveness.
Conduct follow-up of research subjects, via face-to-face encounters, telephone, teleconferencing or other electronic media including email.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm

Qualifications
BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT - Applicants must possess a Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
AND
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic education requirement, applicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience that equipped them with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position, and that is typically in or related to the work of this position. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service. Specialized experience includes: managing clinical trials research; managing day-to-day operations for research portfolios inclusive of the budget and staffing; conducting subject recruitment and enrollment; conducting research on human subjects; and collecting and managing data.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION FOR EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): A Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree with courses that provide the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
OR
COMBINATION OF EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED): Equivalent combination of specialized experience and graduate education as described above.

Physical Requirements: The work is primarily sedentary, but does require walking, standing, and carrying light to moderately heavy packages or boxes (e.g., study documentation in binders, samples for shipping). Some travel may be required.
