This position is within the Prosthetic-Orthotic Laboratory, within the Prosthetic & Sensory Aids Department, at the North Texas Health Care System, Bonham, Texas.
Duties
Measures, fits and repairs appliance, such as shoes, inserts, corsets, belts, trusses, breast prosthesis, Bras, compression garments or simple braces for cases which require standard techniques. Interprets physician prescriptions, measures, fits appliances to clients with a variety of conditions that often require adapting standard techniques. Incumbent will also be responsible for assisting in the assembly of components for custom orthotic/prosthetic devices.
The incumbent will be assigned work and/or receive training with the objective of acquiring the qualifications needed to successfully perform the duties and responsibilities of the target level position description. Delegated authorities and responsibilities may be less than at the target level. Upon meeting all regulatory requirements for promotion, demonstration of fully acceptable performance, and satisfactory completion of any applicable training plans, the incumbent may be noncompetitively promoted to the target position.
Work Schedule: Monday- Friday, 8am -4:30pm

Physical Requirements: Duties require extensive periods of standing and walking. Duties require regular and recurring bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, pushing, reaching, carrying supplies and similar activities. Duties require incumbent to be able to lift. Occasionally it may be necessary to lift supplies and objects weighing as much as 50 pounds. Requires use of proper body mechanics.
Promotion Potential: The selectee may be promoted to the full performance level without further competition when all regulatory, qualification, and performance requirements are met. Selection at a lower grade level does not guarantee promotion to the full performance level.

Qualifications

Individual Occupational Requirement: Positions in this series range widely in type and include support duties to medical or health personnel such as audiologists, speech pathologists, medical officers, and optometrists. Therefore, technician experience is experience that required application of the knowledge, methods, and techniques of the position to be filled.
GS-06 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: evaluation of the patient to determine appropriate orthotic device and/or service. Conducts gait analysis, range of motion, coordination and balance, motor skills, and clinical assessment studies in accordance with occupational principles for unusual conditions, multiplex, and interrelate conditions.
There is no educational substitution for the GS-06 level.
GS-07 grade level: One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the federal service); experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSA's) and other characteristics to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled, in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Specialized experience includes: Interprets physician prescriptions and verifies disability code on prescription is appropriate for device being requested by using understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and or physiology. Educates and assists providers with the correct submission of prosthetic consults for orthotic items. Operates with safety orthotic machinery while limiting all potential health hazards involving the use of plastics and chemicals in the fabrication of orthotic items. Utilizes and manages inventory databases such as the Generic Inventory Package (GIP). Assists in the assembly of components for custom orthotic/ prosthetic devices.

Applicants may substitute education for the experience required for the GS-07 level: possess one full year of graduate level education. Education must be directly related to the work of the position

Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at the GS-07 level: a combination of education and experience as described above. (TRANSCRIPT REQUIRED)
To calculate, first identify the percentage of required education you have earned (when substituting, you cannot use the first 60 semester hours that you earned). Then identify the percentage of required experience you possess. Add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify at the GS-XX.
