About the Position: This is a Lock and Dam Equipment Mechanic WY-5318-10 position with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Operations Division, Colorado River Locks Project. Located in Matagorda, TX. This is a Temporary Time Limited Assignment Not to Exceed 180 days; and will NOT be made permanent. This is an obligated position.

Duties

Performs repairs and installations of hydraulic and mechanical systems, performs preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities. Inspects, adjusts, lubricates, tests, installs, calibrates, and/or performs major and minor repairs at regularly scheduled intervals. Disassembles electric/hydraulic systems or subsystems thereof to determine extent of repairs and/or overhaul required. Inspects, troubleshoots, and/or rebuilds electric motors, diesel and gasoline engines of associated equipment at the facility. Perform preventive maintenance, diagnostic maintenance inspections and rebuilds lock and dam operating systems, machinery, and related equipment at navigational facilities. Perform installation of new equipment, maintenance, repair, overhaul or replacement of parts, systems, equipment, etc., normally associated with the building, grounds and utilities of such facilities. Maintain project administrative maintenance records in connection with all preventive maintenance and repairs for project mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, mobile land plant, floating plant, and inventory management.

Requirements

• Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
• This position meets the criteria for random drug testing under the Department of the Army Drug-Free Federal Workplace Program as supplemented by USACE Pamphlet 600-1-3.
• Incumbent may be required to have an American Red Cross Standard First Aid card, CPR, and/or AED in good standing and/or wear a prescribed uniform based on site specific requirements.
• Must obtain and maintain a current and valid state driver's license.
• Employees are required to observe established safe working procedures.
• Appropriate protective clothing and/or equipment is provided to minimize or eliminate hazardous conditions, and its use is mandatory.
• Employee may be required to acquire and maintain appropriate Corps of Engineers equipment operating licenses based on site specific requirements.
• This position requires the completion of a pre-employment physical examination and an annual examination.
• This position may require rotating shifts.

At a minimum, your level of experience must show that you have: The ability to perform common tasks associated in the installation, repair, and maintenance of lock or lock and dam machinery and/or equipment of mechanical or electrical. I can operate a variety of power-driven hand tools and used a variety of hand/electrical tools to accomplish simple maintenance tasks. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating. Routinely lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Uses coordination of eyes, hands, legs and body in installing, repairing, or testing equipment in confined spaces such as manholes, enclosed switchgear structures, or on overhead structures; climbs ladders and poles. Machinery on high lift structures is large and requires the skills of a heavy construction mechanic to effect repair or replacement. WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed indoors and outdoors during the day or night subject to inclement weather, on high structures usually over water that is frequently turbulent, in the proximity of moving machinery and high tension electrical equipment, on scaffolds and from slings or floating plant. Occasionally will work behind bulkheads or in tunnels below water level. Incumbent is subject to falls, drowning, electrical shocks, injury, or discomfort and when inside, exposure to moving machinery, electrical circuits and loud noises, and at times, dangerous icy conditions. Uses safety equipment such as life vests, protective ear devices, hard hats, hard toe shoes, respirators and protective clothing.
