This position is located in the Fleet/Grounds Department in the Engineering Section of Facilities Management Service. The primary purpose of the position involves, but is not limited to, the operation of equipment assigned to maintain the grounds to include but not limited to tractors, weed eaters, saws, scythes, snow removal equipment, hand tools, tree and bush trimmers, equipment used to clean ditches. complete demolition, cut grass, weed control, and clean up grounds.

Duties

Duties include, but are not limited to: Operates farm-type tractors through hydraulic or mechanical controls. Steers tractors on hillsides to compensate for the degree of slope and stability of the ground. Handles controls that operate lifting devices, such as forklifts, backhoes and/or skip loaders. Operates a variety of heavy equipment with attachments or towing equipment, bulldozers, backhoes, snowplows, dump trucks, street sweeper, etc. Adjusts attachments for proper positioning and working order without stopping machine or power unit. Operates lifting devices, such as forklifts, lift beams and swivel-hooks, hoists, and elevating platforms, to load, unload, and stack material. Performs routine maintenance to vehicles and heavy equipment including maintaining oil levels, water, tire pressure, adjusting blades, tightening screws, bolts and lubrication. Moves tractor or other industrial type equipment around in confined areas and manipulates controls for projects requiring close tolerances. Possesses knowledge of soil and terrain to determine the proper approach according to the condition of surface and subsurface. Remains alert to hazards encountered in the use of motor vehicles. Remains mentally alert to traffic hazards, including weather conditions. Drives tractors, etc. using caution. Completes all assignments as quickly as possible without delay with dexterity and dependability. Performs tasks with minimum instructions and use own judgment in assignments when away on facility assignments. Exercise independent skill and concentration on assignments concerning approach, manipulations and method to accomplish the assignments. Work Schedule: Monday through Friday, Intermittent Schedule; will be determined by the agency/hiring manager. Physical Requirements/Working Conditions: The work requires long periods of sitting, walking, standing, and stooping. Must be able to move, load, and carry materials and supplies. Must be physically able to routinely lift and move items weighing 50 pounds and occasionally items weighing as much as 100 pounds. Incumbent must have the physical ability to apply asphalt, load and unload materials, supplies, and tools; cut grass, trim trees, clean ditches, move earth, etc. Performs heavy lifting using proper body mechanics to prevent injuries to self or other personnel. Heavy physical effort may be required in loading and unloading materials and in the handling of various supplies/materials. Incumbent is required to work outside in all kinds of weather and is exposed to extreme weather conditions, including but not limited to cold, snow, sleet, freezing rain, rain, hot weather, and dusty conditions while loading and unloading materials and/or maintaining grounds. Works at times under disagreeable conditions cutting weeds, grass and/or trees in hot weather, etc. Must operate equipment in all types of weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents. Incumbent is subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while loading and unloading materials. May be exposed to bees, wasps, hornets and other types of insects in common practice. Work is performed primarily outdoors. Incumbent is exposed to dirt, dust, mud, chemical sprays, noise and vibrations, hot and cold weather. Subject to slips and falls during snowy/icy conditions.
