This position is located at US Mint,San Francisco Mint - MANUF DEPT/Plant Mgr CA/PROD DIV CA/COINING SEC/DIE POLISHING BR. As a BUFFER AND POLISHER, you will set up, operate, and maintain computer-controlled polishing machines, computer-controlled laser etching machines, computer-controlled ultrasonic cleansing machines, and computer-controlled physical vapor deposition (PVD) machines to transform raw dies to proof-set dies intended for single- or two-toned coins of a gem-like quality.
Duties
As a BUFFER AND POLISHER, you will:
Perform hand-operated buffers and polishers to achieve a level of detail and perfection that cannot be achieved solely using computer-controlled equipment.
Determine enhancements required to produce proof-set dies that conform to rigorous quality standards across denominations and coin sets.
Operate laser engraving machine to apply a frosted appearance to hub images (lettering and artwork) on dies.
Operate Teer Coatings PVD system to apply a coating of chromium atoms to dies.
Evaluate dies, select appropriate cleaning solutions and methods of application, and clean dies for inspection; inspections are performed using stereoscopes, 7x loupes, and magnifying lenses.
Work with other department to remove coin-stamping surfaces from dies, verify with the Mint Police that each die has been defaced, and then coordinate with the Inventory Management Division to ensure that die is properly tracked in inventory system.
