This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.
Duties
Review, code, and analyze medical records and identifies inaccurate entries and/or omissions.
Evaluate medical records for completeness and perform coding of diagnoses and diagnostic and therapeutic procedures based on record documentation.
Verify that record documentation is sufficient for coding purposes and that results obtained are adequately described and records are screened to accurately locate any indication of infections or complications occurring during treatment.
Follow standard operating procedures to research, analyze and abstract pertinent information from records that may include multiple injuries, diseases, and/or medico/surgical procedures and reports findings to requestors.
Maintain an accurate and detailed record of all requests to ensure proper tracking and reporting.
Make copies of records either on paper or electronic media in accordance with federal, state, and HIPAA/Privacy regulations.
Use multiple office automation software with varied functions to produce a wide range of documents, formats, etc.
Recognize differences in existing procedures and applications and makes choices from among established alternatives.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Personnel Security Investigation is required.
- A one-year probationary period is required if the selectee has not previously met this requirement.
- Selectees will be required to sign a statement (Condition of Employment) consenting to seasonal influenza vaccinations or must provide a recognized exemption.
- Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
- Must be able to obtain and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification through the American Red Cross or American Heart Association. Advanced certification (e.g., ALS) does not supersede BLS.

Basic Requirement for a Medical Records Technician (Office Automation):
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes performing data input into automated systems and collecting or reviewing information for coding. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-04).
OR
Education: Four years of education above the high school level obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide your semester hours of education beyond two years (total semester hours minus 60) by 60. Add the two percentages.
PROFICIENCY REQUIRED: This position requires a qualified typist. A qualified typist can type 40 words per minute based on a 5 minute sample with three or fewer errors.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
