This position is located at the Riverside National Cemetery in Riverside, California.

Duties

This is a bargaining unit position. This position is represented by AFGE. Please note that as provided for in the AFGE/VA Master Agreement the FIRST area of consideration for this position will be permanent employees of the local facility in which this position is being filled, the SECOND area of consideration will be employees at other VA facilities, and the THIRD area of consideration will be all other eligibles. The incumbent is responsible for operating a variety of gasoline and diesel-powered engineering equipment in a variety of terrain to push, pull, pile and load sand, gravel, earth, topsoil and other materials. He/She will be responsible for ensuring the proper depth, dimensions and accurate locations of all grave sites. Operates one or more types of heavy equipment to excavate, push, pile or load materials such as earth, sand, gravel, bark dust, compost, yard debris, or refuse. Moves backhoe into place for digging designated graves, ensures that the truck or dumpster is properly placed to receive excavated dirt. Incumbent will perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs to cemetery equipment. The incumbent will be cross trained in all aspects of cemetery work and will assist with various tasks related to interments, customer satisfaction, and other duties which may be performed on a rotating basis. Work schedule: May be required to work Monday through Friday to include occasional weekends. Due to the mission of the National Cemetery, the cemetery cannot be closed for more than 2 consecutive days at any given time. Additionally, when a Federal holiday falls on a Monday or Friday, staff may be required to work on that holiday or a Saturday. All staff is required to work Memorial Day each year. Staff will be required to work overtime, weekends and holidays when necessary to meet the needs of the cemetery. Occasionally staff may be called back to the facility to perform emergency overtime work. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 02/15/2024. Your background must demonstrate work involved in the operation of equipment such as graders, tractors with bulldozer or angledozer blades, front-end loaders, backhoes, trench diggers, and large industrial tractors with pan or scraper attachments. EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Physical Requirements: Moderate physical effort with good manual dexterity is needed to moderate hand and foot controls. Incumbent may be required to lift objects over 100 pounds when attaching equipment implement. Considerate strain is caused by constant vibration while operating equipment such as backhoes. Frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, pushing, climbing, kneeling, lifting moderately heavy objects is required during performance of assigned duties. Must use full range of upper and lower body extremities. Operates power tools and equipment for extended periods of time. Exposed to noise levels exceeding 85 decibels. Working Conditions: Incumbent's work is performed in all types of weather. Terrain will range from flat to rolling hills. Work is performed around trees, headstone/markers and other obstructions. Incumbent wears protective clothing as required such as hardhat, goggles, ear protection, dust mask and face shield. Must have a valid Class B state driver's license or be able to obtain one within 6 months of being selected for the position.
