Introduction The position is located at a Department of Veterans Affairs VHA Medical Center, and serves as a Recreation Assistant working to implement the objectives of the Integrative Health Coordinating Center and the VHA Office of Patient-Centered Care and Cultural Transformation. The position is responsible for providing yoga instruction for the purpose of promoting, restoring, and preserving health and well-being of Veterans at the VA Medical Center.
Duties

-Prepares and sets up yoga setting and equipment to support scheduled events and activities.
- Instructs Veterans on the safe use of yoga equipment; provides transportation for off station recreational outings; ensures the safety of patients during all activities on and off station; uses good judgment and tact when confronted with problems arising between people in the community and any Veteran. - Cultivates a cooperative interrelationship between patients, family members, and VA medical center staff.
- Conducts well-being classes, either group or individual, for the purpose of promoting, preserving, or restoring health and well-being. - Provides informal input to the supervisor concerning pertinent topics to meet facility or patient needs.
- Coordinates with other staff members concerning the use of the yoga facilities for activities and develops and maintains a calendar of programs and activities. - Develops marketing requests and advertising efforts for special events to encourage participation in yoga programs. Recommends additions, deletions, or changes to facility rules and operating procedures.
- Takes actions consistent with the objectives of the yoga program. - Reviews and recommends changes concerning the effectiveness of ongoing recreational programs from the standpoint of participant response, resources, unforeseen developments, and program objectives.
- Works independently when addressing a variety of yoga related administrative problems or situations.
- Conducts regular inventories of equipment and supplies.
- Turns in items and completes necessary documentation to maintain accountability.
- As assigned, the work may include purchasing supplies, equipment and other materials utilizing prescribed purchasing guidelines and procedures; attends to budgetary matters when needed.
- Conducts regular inspections of equipment and initiates and tracks work orders to repair equipment.
- Compiles, prepares, and submits records, reports and requests concerning participation, material and equipment purchases, and inventories.
- Ensures that all supply and equipment requirements are identified/justified and requested through proper channels.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday (7:30 - 4:00pm)

Qualifications
One (1) full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-5) in the Federal Service that has given me the knowledge, skills and abilities required to successfully perform the duties of a Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Qualifying specialized experience includes; knowledge of the concepts, principles, and practices of therapeutic recreation. ability to plan and implement recreational activities and outings. Requires familiarity with the physical and mental capabilities, emotional and psychological considerations, and interests of individuals for whom recreational activities are planned. Knowledge of general exercise programs and exercise equipment and safety factors in demonstrating and observing use of exercise equipment. When working one-on-one determines their degree of interaction with activities and what action may be needed to enhance their participation. -OR-
Successfully completed at least one-half year (1/2) of graduate level education (9 semester hours above a bachelor's degree) or an internship in course matter that must include courses directly related to the work of the Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts (unofficial or official) must be submitted with your application materials. Equivalent combinations of successfully completed graduate level education and specialized experience, as described above, which meet the total experience requirements for this grade level. The education portion must include graduate courses directly related to the work of the Recreation Assistant - Yoga Instructor position. IMPORTANT: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. All experience listed on your resume must include the month and year start/end dates. Physical Requirements: The work of the position requires considerable physical exertion in order to perform the assigned duties. The environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of and office or training room setting. The work area is adequately lighted, heated and ventilated.
