This position is located in the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), Office of Training (TR), Domestic Training Section (TRD). This position(s) primary purpose is to serve as a Firearms Instructor and course developer for the Basic Agent Training Program (BATP) and DEA In-Service Training such as the DEA Firearms Instructor School (FIS). Additionally, the incumbent will manage specific program areas within the overall DEA Firearms Program.

As a Training Specialist (Firearms), your typical work assignments may include: Managing and overseeing the Firearms Training Program for the DEA. Serving as the DEA authoritative technical firearms expert, providing training to DEA personnel in practical applications in collaboration with other Firearms instructors regarding Firearms Training and Basic Marksmanship for rifles and handguns. Recommending enhancements to the firearms program and architecture within the DEA agency-wide. Developing total course content in a broad specialty area, a subject-matter field, or a cluster of courses. Participating in planning and developing or evaluating and revising the curriculum for a training program and an academic department.

  • Applicant must possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator's license while employed in the position and will be required to operate the motor vehicle in accordance with applicable OPM regulations and related requirements of DOJ/DEA.
  • If selected, required to become IDC certified within 3 months of assignment.
  • POLYGRAPH: Employee may be required to undergo and successfully complete a counterintelligence-scope polygraph examination with No Deception Indicated (NDI) as part of requirements.
  • LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT: This position authorizes the incumbent to carry a firearm.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the Basic Requirement and Specialized Experience requirements as noted below. All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of this announcement. Basic Requirement: Education: Undergraduate and Graduate Education: Major study -- education or a subject area related to the position to be filled; OR Experience that demonstrated a practical knowledge of the subject area of the position and of the methods and techniques of instruction. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include: Teaching or instructing in an adult education program, secondary school, college, military installation, or industrial establishment in the appropriate field(s). Supervising or administering a training program. Development or review of training/course materials, aids, devices, etc., and evaluation of training results. Work in the occupation or subject-matter field of the position to be filled that required training or instructing others on a regular basis; and You may qualify at the GS-13 level, if you fulfill the following qualification requirement: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service (experience may have been gained in the private sector) that demonstrate your ability in: 1) Serving as authoritative consultant for Firearms instructional material developer; 2) Planning and developing innovations or modifications to provide new training to staff; 3) Providing problem solving assistance; technical reviews and leadership over education and training organization. Specialized experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Competencies: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competencies in the following areas: Education and TrainingEducational ProgramsWritten Communication Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-13 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-12. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.
