This is a Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) position. The incumbent is responsible for the lead duties in the Sterile Processing Service. They must complete the SPS Level I training program within 90 days of hire and maintain a minimum of twelve continuing education hours annually. Incumbent must be able to direct and lead SPS personnel and communicate effectively to ensure user unit needs are met on a consistent basis.

Major Duties:
Directs and leads SPS personnel and communicate effectively to ensure user unit needs are met on a consistent basis.
Possesses the knowledge and skills to accurately and meticulously decontaminate, process, sterilize and high-level disinfect a wide variety of complex, medical, surgical, endoscopic and dental devices.
Balances the workload among employees in accordance with established work flow or job specialization, assures timely accomplishment of the assigned workload.
Monitors and reports the status and progress of work and adjusts workload according to established priorities.
Maintains current knowledge of policies, VA Directives, IAHCSMM guidelines as well as knowledge of AAMI and AORN Standards.
Ability to orient new staff, to a full range of:
(1) Sets and trays used throughout the medical center, including those used in the operating room, and
(2) medical/surgical terminology, human anatomy, and physiology.
Acts as a preceptor to new staff members to include Contracting Staff, and Medical Enlisted Training College (METC) Joint services clinical Surgical/SPS training programs and assist in orientation and training under the guidance SPS Supervisors, Quality Assurance Staff and MST Instructors.
Directs the cleaning priorities of contaminated reusable medical equipment from wards, operating rooms, and clinics and ensures staff inspects these items for damage and that they are in good working condition.
Is a resource for Medical Supply Technicians in the loading and operation of sterilizers such as Steam, Sterrad, Ethelyn Oxide (ETO) and high-level disinfecting process (HLD) as well as reprocessing of endoscopes using Automated Endoscope Re processors (AER).
Responsible for the surgical schedule for instrumentation needs for the next day surgical schedule.
Responsible to ensure that staff follows first in, first-out basis for rotation of stock.
Accommodates special and emergent requirements through consultation and coordination with medical/surgical professional staff.
Performs second checks of MST instrument set validation, for that tour of duty or day, per VA Directive.
Assigns/monitors the Medical Supply Technicians as they complete, document and maintain records for out-of-date monitors, cleaning schedules, nonbiological implants monitors, verify sterilization monitors for SPS, etc.
Acts as a liaison and SME for SPS to all services to assure their RME needs are met.
Informs and assists the Supervisor of any instrumentation needed for completeness of sets and the requesting of supplies used within the decontamination, prep and GI areas of SPS.
Assists with Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) enforcement, management and review, and provide on spot checks and education to staff as needed.
Enters and follows-up for equipment work orders, communicating closely with Biomed, Logistics, and company representatives to assure proper functioning of SPS equipment.
Prepares and communicates shift reports and work status to other staff members at daily meeting under the Supervisors supervision.
Uses full knowledge of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position.
Required to maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position.
Able to demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; OR
Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; OR
Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Certification. None.
English Language Proficiency. MSTs must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part.
May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations: GS-07 Lead Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)
Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level. Experience may include knowledge of surgical instruments used in operating rooms and clinic settings, knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination, working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, medical conditions and procedures, knowledge of sterility principles in regards to instrumentation, and ability to read and interpret written instructions and procedures.
In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments.
Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations.
Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers.
Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures.
Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.
Preferred Experience:
Knowledge of universal precautions for safety and prevention of cross contamination.
Must be able to demonstrate knowledge of cleaning, disinfection, sterilization, and preparation of Reusable Medical Equipment.
Knowledge of surgical instrumentation used in operating rooms and clinical settings.
Knowledge of sterilization and cleaning equipment.
