Operates motor vehicles for the chief purpose of chauffeuring SSA's Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner. Customary driving is in the Baltimore-DC area and other destinations as required. Duties

Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. As the personal chauffeur for SSA's Commissioner or Deputy Commissioner, drives a passenger sedan or SUV. Other Cabinet-level officials, agency staff members, government officials or foreign dignitaries may also need to be transported. Chooses travel routes according to destination, traffic density, road conditions, detours and safety. Performs associated duties, including planning routes, everyday scheduling and minor automotive repair and maintenance. Follows selected or prescribed route, identifies acceptable alternative routes for use in adverse conditions or emergencies and notifies the Transportation Office whenever a destination is beyond the local limits. Maintains accurate Portal-to-Portal worksheet and ensure the Portal-to-Portal worksheets are submitted in a timely manner. Responsible for the safe hauling of cargo or documents and the secure transport and suitable comfort of passengers on extended trips; must be cognizant of essential travel arrangements including schedules and reservations. When services are not required by agency executives, operates other vehicles for transportation of persons, mail, supplies and equipment within the Baltimore-DC metro area and occasionally to other destinations. Other vehicles driven may include passenger sedans, station wagons, medium trucks of approximate gross vehicle weight of 10,000 to 19,000 pounds and 10-15 passenger buses. Performs associated duties, including planning routes, everyday scheduling and minor automotive repair and maintenance. Sorts, files and duplicates speeches, documents and other materials for executives in the Baltimore and DC offices. Performs daily inspection of vehicle to ensure that gas, oil, tires, lights, windows, brakes, etc, meet vehicle operating standards.

Qualifications

To qualify for this WG-08 MOTOR VEHICLE OPERATOR position you must demonstrate: (1)a valid Class C, State of Maryland (or equal) Driver's License (2) the Screen Out AND (3) the five individual Job Elements (1) SCREEN OUT: ABILITY TO PERFORM MVO / CHAUFFEUR WORK WITHOUT MORE THAN NORMAL SUPERVISION You must have a fundamental understanding of motor vehicle operation and ability to provide personal chauffeur services based on the following knowledge, skills, and abilities: (1) Ability to safely operate a variety of motor vehicles (2) Ability to interpret instructions or directions related to the operation of motor vehicles (3) Ability to maintain motor vehicles in safe and operational condition (4) Ability to provide personal chauffeuring services for agency executives At a minimum, your level of work must not require more than regular spot checks and/or guidance during progress and upon completion. (2) JOB ELEMENTS: Describe duties you perform that show you have (at a minimum): Ability to operate motor vehicles -- general skill in maneuvering passenger sedans or SUVs on familiar public roads and highways under favorable circumstances and normal road conditions. Ability to follow work practices -- assist with loading and arranging cargo, follow planned routes, recognize the need for routine maintenance and provide information needed to complete driver reports, as requested and under general supervision. Ability to interpret instructions -- basic understanding of common instructions pertaining to motor vehicles, driving and roads (for example, written or verbal directions, standard traffic and road signs or basic guidelines for loading/unloading of cargo) and apply this information as requested and under general supervision. Ability to drive safely -- apply common safety requirements while operating large-motor-vehicles as evidenced by my satisfactory record of safe driving assignments. Reliability and dependability -- adequate record of adherence to established times, routes and stops while safely and efficiently transporting passengers and/or cargo (for example, exhibiting occasional tardiness in reporting for an assigned shift/route or experiencing sporadic delays in completing assigned itineraries). CONDITIONS OF POSITION Due to the nature of work in this position, the following conditions are essential for successful performance, and you must fully comply with these conditions to meet performance requirements. (1) Must be able to perform work without more than normal supervision. (2) MVOs in this position must possess and maintain a valid Class C, State of Maryland (or equal) driver's license. (3) Must have defensive driving skills, ability to recognize developing hazardous road or traffic conditions and ability to alter routes to avoid potential problems. (4) Performs minor maintenance such as replacing light bulbs and keeping exterior and interior of vehicle clean. (5) Uses moderate physical effort to handle packages, luggage or other objects weighing up to 30 pounds and occasionally handles objects weighing over 60 pounds. (6) Uses light physical effort to reach, bend, turn or move hands, arms, feet, and legs to operate hand and foot controls. (7) Works in all weather conditions, usually inside an enclosed vehicle, but is occasionally exposed to bad weather conditions; must be able to sit and drive for long periods. (8) Drives in all types of traffic and is exposed to the possibility of vehicular accidents; drives in heavy traffic at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems. (9) Makes emergency on-road repairs, such as changing flat tires; may make emergency repairs in inclement weather; considerable physical effort may be required to make emergency repairs or changes to the vehicle. (10) MVOs in this position are "on call" 24-hours a day. (11) Must be available for nearby or distant trips and for frequent and irregular overtime duty with little or no advance notice. (12) MVOs in this position should have an understanding of the Commissioner's or Deputy Commissioner's requirements related to travel and his/her personal activity schedule. (13) Must be cognizant of essential travel arrangements, including schedules and reservations.
