Duties

Supervise, lead, and manage technical training of less experienced surveyors, geodesists, technicians, and interns in proper hydrographic and topographic surveying methods, concepts, procedures and subsequent data analysis and delivery to customers Educate customers on the relative accuracy of survey data given specific parameters of the work environment and associated error budgets. Monitors advances in land surveying and hydrographic surveying theory and practices, electronic positioning, mapping, and data reduction software available within the industry Determines the appropriate staff, equipment, boats, and other resources needed to accomplish the specific requirements of each survey requirement within time and budget allowances. Resolves complicated, novel, or unprecedented surveying problems caused by conflicting data or other notable evidence.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This is a Key Essential position and is subject to 24-hour recall to perform emergency response duties and may include tour(s) of duty on weekends or nights to support training for or during actual emergency operation.
  • Incumbent must be able to walk for prolonged periods of time over uneven terrain and aboard sea going vessels. Must be able to operate a motor vehicle to reach work sites.
  • Visiting job sites requires working outdoors and is required to travel in temporary duty (TDY) status approximately 10-15% of the time.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in geodesy, or a degree that included 30 semester hours in any combination of geodesy, mathematics, physics, astronomy, engineering science, surveying, geodetic surveying, photogrammetry, or geophysics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Specialized Experience: experience working directly with topographic and hydrographic field surveying activities to include: field experience in the actual operation of a variety topographic and hydrographic data collection systems such as total station, multi-beam, and sidescan sonars; survey data management, mapping, and the quality control and quality assurance of topographic elevations and bathymetry; orthometric heights and proper horizontal and vertical datums used in the collection of the georeferenced data. Candidate should have a physical science BS degree and extensive background in surveying and geomatics to successfully be able to handle the full extent of the position duties at this level. Candidate should have experience in leading teams in a highly dynamic field environment.
