The Air Conditioning Equipment Mechanic is assigned to the Maintenance and Operations section of Engineering in Facilities Management Service at the Lake City Division of the North Florida/South Georgia Veterans Healthcare System.

Duties

Major duties include but are not limited to: Maintains, troubleshoots, and makes repairs on industrial/commercial Air Handling Units with associated equipment including chill-water coils, steam or hot-water coils, remotely controlled valve actuators, belt-driven supply and return fans and motors, actuated air dampers, humidifiers, air filters, temperature and humidity sensors, static pressure sensors, freezestats, etc. Maintains, troubleshoots, and makes repairs on all commercial walk-in coolers/freezers and associated equipment including, but not limited to all remote compressors ,remote condensers, evaporators, thermostats, sensors, defrost timers, expansion valves, solenoids, etc. Ensures proper function of each Air Handling Unit and completes visual inspections of filters ,belts, motors, fans, bearings, alignment, access door gaskets, damper movement, actuator valve movement, air or water leakage, sensors, and freeze-stat operation. Performs all preventative maintenance (PM) inspections in accordance with manufacturer's specifications or to any superseded VAMC policy. Ensures proper function of air-cooled chillers and completes visual inspections of chiller, chiller controls, actuator valves, thermometers, pressure gauges, differential pressure sensors, flow switches, etc. Uses balometer capture hoods to determine air flow readings at ductwork registers and diffusers in order to calculate room air changes. Utilizes skills in the use and maintenance of some hand-held power tools and a wide variety of hand tools. Maintains all tools, test equipment, and personal protective equipment in good working order and ensuring that they are cleaned and stored properly after each use. Accomplishes all work in accordance with applicable electrical, mechanical, and pipefitting safety codes related to their trade. This is in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act. (NOTE: You will be required to provide a copy of the certification if referred for interview).

Physical Requirements: May be required to lift or carry loads unassisted of up to 40 pounds on a regular basis. May also be required to lift or carry loads above 40 pounds with the assistance of coworkers or equipment. Other physical requirements include sitting, standing, walking, climbing kneeling, bending or stooping, twisting, pulling, or pushing, simple grasping, reaching above the shoulders, and fine manipulation such as keyboarding or instrumentation adjustments. Work will involve a large quantity of walking, climbing stairs and climbing ladders. Working Conditions: The incumbents work is subject to all weather conditions and work environments. May be required to work inside or outside, in wet or dry locations, in hot or cold temperatures, in highly humidity, in dirty or dusty spaces, in dark or crowded ceilings, in small or cramped spaces, or elevated platforms or aerial lifts, or ladders or scaffolds, or in isolated or awkward locations to install or repair equipment. Potential hazards of work include cuts and scrapes, burns, bumps or bruises, electrical shock, skin irritations, dust or smoke irritants, and respiratory ailments.
