Duties

Performs a variety of developmental assignments of progressive difficulty in functional specialties of engineering and drafting. Participates in planned formal educational programs such as university courses, interagency programs, professional society meetings, seminars, and related activities. Assists in the collection, preparation and assembly of basic project data. May assist a professional engineer in obtaining additional data required for contract specifications. Provides assistance to higher level employees by extracting and compiling data for inclusion in reports, modifications, and specifications. Drafts replies to miscellaneous correspondence, preparing fact sheets and assisting in revising a variety of reports to reflect the comments of others.

GS-04: Completion of 2 academic years post-high school study or Associate's degree OR completion of 1 academic year of post high school study and 2 periods of student trainee work experience; or completion of 1 1/2 academic years of post high school study and 1 period of student trainee work experience. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g. professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. The applicant will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. A period of student trainee work experience is equal to 320 hours of work experience. Academic Year: At the undergraduate level, 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours is comparable to 1 year of undergraduate education. Four years of progressive study or 120 semester hours meets the degree requirements. At the graduate level, 18 semester hours or 27 quarter hours. This position has a positive education requirement for conversion. The required education must lead to a degree with specialization in or directly related to the field in which the student trainee is participating in the Intern program. The degree of specialization in this field must satisfy, on graduation, the specific requirements as listed in the qualification standard for professional engineering positions. Review the positive education requirements at: all-professional-engineering-positions-0800.pdf (opm.gov) The term positive education requirement (also called a basic education requirement) refers to an Office of Personnel Management (OPM) determination that the duties of a scientific, technical, or professional position cannot be performed by an individual that does not have the prescribed minimum education. The specific qualification requirements for scientific and professional positions must also be met in order to be converted. To be eligible for conversion to a permanent or term position, these Interns must also: Be a U.S. Citizen or National; Complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program; Complete their degree or certificate requirements; Meet the Office of Personnel Management's qualification standards for the position to which the Intern will be converted (which may include a positive education requirement); Meet all agency and program specific requirements as specified in their individual Participant Agreement; Perform their job successfully as documented through performance evaluations; and Be recommended for conversion by their manager or supervisor. If converted to permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position is in the Engineering occupation based on the need of the organization at that time. The full performance level of the target position will be dependent on the type of position and will be determined at the time of conversion.

Education

Accreditation: Only education from an accredited college or university recognized by the Department of Education is acceptable to meet education requirements or to substitute for experience, if applicable. Foreign Education: To receive credit for education completed outside the United States, you must show proof that the education has been submitted to a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education has been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education programs. You will be required to provide official college transcripts to verify educational qualifications, if selected. An official transcript must be sent directly from the University's Registrar's office and must be provided from the institution awarding the degree. Academic transcripts certified by notary publics are NOT official. Official transcripts must be submitted prior to reporting to work as a condition of employment. Failure to submit official transcripts may be grounds for dismissal or rescission of the job offer.

Interns must provide a copy of up-to-date transcripts (unofficial) at the end of each academic year, unless requested more frequently by the supervisor or Human Resources Office, for verification of enrollment and academic standing as proof of continuing eligibility for participation in the Intern Program.
