The primary purpose of this position is to inspect the maintenance, overhaul, and repair a variety of light to heavy duty vehicles and mobile equipment, to include utility systems or special hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, electrical, or electronic systems, features, or controls designed for such purposes as construction, combat, earth moving, firefighting.

Duties

- Inspects vehicles such as sedans, light and heavy trucks and tractors, material handling equipment, fire fighting units, base maintenance equipment, and aircraft tow tractors. - Debriefs vehicle operators regarding vehicle maintenance procedures. - Tests and ensures complete serviceability of safety devices and accessories, tow hitches, winches, cables, etc. - Utilizes safety practices and procedures. - Performs quality control inspections on work completed in the repair shops.

  • Must receive training on the handling and disposition of hazardous waste.
  • Trains and/or guides other personnel as required.
  • The work requires the employee to drive motor vehicles. A valid driver's license is required for the position.
  • May attend formal training and/or maintain and repair vehicles or equipment that is outside the commuting area. May be required to travel by military or commercial aircraft.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • This is a Drug Testing designated position. The incumbent is subject to random testing for drug use.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the quality level of experience requirements described in the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards Handbook X-118C. QUALIFICATIONS: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C for the WG-5800-Transportation/Mobile Equipment Maintenance Family. Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most blue-collar positions, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. The screen out element for this position is the ability to do the work of the position without more than normal supervision. JOB ELEMENTS: Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas: 1. Knowledge of mobile equipment assembly, installation, and repair. 2. Knowledge of technical practices in order to repair/overhaul major systems, i.e., diesel, multi-fuel, and gasoline engines, automatic and manual transmissions, multi-gear assemblies, and a variety of positioning systems. 3. Knowledge of safety practices and procedures. 4. Skill in usjng measuring instruments and test equipment such as engine analyzers, dynamometers, exhaust analyzers, vacuum and fuel pump testers, injector testers, ignition timers, tachometers, ammeters, and ohmmeters. 5. Skill in troubleshooting mechanical problems, analyzing malfunctions, and determining the extent of repairs necessary. 6, Ability to maintain, troubleshoot, overhaul, repair, and modify a variety of mobile vehicles and equipment without more than normal supervision. Ability to interpret instructions, technical manuals, illustrations, specifications, diagrams, schematics, and similar guides to make repairs and modifications. Ability to use and maintain hand and/or power tools and equipment required to do the work of a mobile equipment inspector. Physical Effort Work is performed in tiring or uncomfortable positions for short periods The work requires frequent standing, bending, reaching. stretching~ climbing, and crouching. Works on top of, under, and in tight compartments, performing work while in cramped or awkward positions. Occasionally lifts and carries items unassisted weighing up to 40 pounds and often exerts similar effort in pushing, pulling, and positioning parts, assemblies, and equipment Occasionally lifts and moves heavier items with the assistance of other workers or with lifting devices such as jacks, hoists, and cranes. May work from ladders or work platforms at varying heights. Working Conditions: Required to perform duties and responsibilities in multiple locations, both inside and outside. When inside, is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise that is difficult to talk above, when outside, is exposed to inclement weather conditions. worker is exposed to irritations and discomfort from dust, heat, and fumes. Worker is subject to cuts burns, chemical irritations, bruises, electrical shock, and injuries from falls. Follows prescribed safety practices and uses safety equipment such as ear devices, hard hats, hard-toe shoes, gloves, respirators, and protective clothing. When issued uniforms, wear will be in accordance with local operating instructions. Some of these safety items may be uncomfortable to wear or use and must be worn for long periods of time. PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week. VOLUNTEER WORK EXPERIENCE: Refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (i.e., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student and social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge and skills that can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
